Somebody walks past your shed, your carport or the container on a lease block and works out in about four seconds whether it is worth their time. Most opportunists are not casing the place. They are looking for the easy one in the row.

If you need evidence, you need a camera that actually records, and this is not it. But covering every corner of a yard with recording gear costs real money, and there are spots where all you need is the look of it — the side gate, the back of the shed, the far end of the carport.

This is a moulded plastic dummy dome with a red light on the front. It runs off two AA cells, it takes no wiring, and it puts a camera-shaped object where a camera would be. Sold openly as a decoy, because that is what it is.

The failure to plan for is the one where you think you have footage and you do not. Nothing plays back, there is no file for the police, nothing for an insurer, and the claim comes down to your word. Treat this as a deterrent and nothing else and it cannot let you down that way.

What It Will Not Do

• No Wi-Fi, no app, no alerts: nothing to pair, nothing on your phone, no notification when somebody walks in.
• No night vision: the beads across the face are there for appearance. No infrared output is specified by the supplier and the packaging lists one light only.
• Motion sensing unconfirmed: the box mentions a motion detector sensor but does not say whether the light blinks constantly or only on movement, and the supplier does not state it. Plan for a light that blinks all the time.
• It will not fool everyone: up close there is no cable running out of it, the housing is light plastic, and a constantly blinking red LED is something most real cameras do not do. Someone who knows cameras will work it out. Someone glancing at it from ten metres away on their way past is a different question.
• No weather rating: listed for indoor and outdoor use, but with no IP rating printed anywhere. Under an eave or a verandah is the sensible spot, not fully exposed.
• Flat cells look broken: batteries are not included and no low-battery warning is specified. A dead LED reads worse than no camera at all, so check it when you change the smoke alarm cells.

If You Actually Need Footage

Plenty of people run both — a real camera on the entry where evidence matters, decoys on the corners it cannot justify. Just never count the decoys as coverage. Does it record anything at all?

Will it actually stop anyone?

Depends entirely on who walks past, and we are not going to put a number on it. What it does reliably is make a spot look monitored. Whether that is enough for your place is your call, and it is the same call you make hanging a beware-of-the-dog sign.

Does the light blink all the time, or only when something moves?

Not specified by supplier. The retail box mentions a motion detector sensor, but nothing on the packaging or the listing says which behaviour you get. Assume it blinks continuously and you will not be disappointed.

Can I leave it out in the weather?

What batteries does it take, and are they included?

Two 1.5V AA cells, and no, they are not included. The box says you take out a screw and slide the top cover open to fit them. If you want cells you are not throwing away, the rechargeable lithium-ion AA and AAA cells fit the same slot.

Is it worth putting one next to a real camera?

That is the usual way people run them. The real one goes where you would want the footage, the decoys go on the corners that never justified a second cable run. The only rule is that you never count a decoy as covered ground.
