Most jackets are too heavy to work in or too flimsy to bother packing. The one you want is the one you'll still be wearing at three in the afternoon.

What's in here

Outer layers, from light windbreakers you can stuff in a pack to fleece-lined M65 field jackets. Several have detachable hoods or sleeves so one jacket covers more of the year.

What we won't claim

• Water resistant is not waterproof: check which one the product page says. A shower is not a day of steady rain.
• Warmth is the whole system, not the jacket: a fleece over a t-shirt and the same fleece over a thermal are two different jackets. Buy for what you'll wear under it.
• Supplier sizing, not Australian: read the chart on the product page, and allow for the layers going underneath.
