A Drone That doesn't Need your Phone.
Most drones at this price want your phone clipped to the remote. That means the phone's battery runs down the whole time you fly, an app has to be installed and kept up to date, and a call or a message can pop up over the picture just as the drone is out over the dam.
The XT606 has its own screen built into the remote. Switch on the drone and the remote and the camera's picture is right there in your hands; the remote charges by USB, and the maker says you can still watch on a phone if you want to. GPS and a downward-looking optical-flow camera hold it in place when you let go of the sticks, and the arms fold it down to about 152 × 86 × 88 mm for the pack.
Pick one, two or three batteries. The maker rates each 3.7 V 2500 mAh battery at about 30 minutes; we have not tested that, and wind, cold and hard flying all cut it. Batteries posted on their own take about two months to get here, so if you want more time in the air, buy them with the drone. We also stock XT606 Spare Propellers, an XT606 Spare Screen Remote and an XT606 Spare Camera for this model.
What it Does
- Takes a Look from Above: over the roof and gutters, along the creek, or down the back of the block, without walking it.
- Films the Trip: camp, the beach run or the convoy from above, with the picture on the remote and no phone tied up.
- Holds Still When you Let Go: GPS outdoors and optical flow over the ground hold its position, which makes a first drone far less nerve-racking.
- Comes Home: the maker shows one-key return and automatic return on low battery, lost signal or over-distance. Treat it as a backstop, not a plan.
- Checks the Paddock: fly out to the far trough instead of driving there. On a working property that is business flying, so read Before you Fly below first.
Key Features
- Screen in the Remote: the camera picture shows on the remote itself, which plays back pictures and charges by USB; phone viewing is also supported, by the maker's description.
- GPS and Optical-Flow Positioning: per the maker's parameter sheet: GPS outdoors, a downward camera reading the ground underneath.
- Return to Home: four return modes in the maker's pictures: one-key, over-distance, lost signal and low battery.
- Dual Camera: a front camera plus a second lens; the maker's parameter sheet calls the camera "HD".
- Flight Modes: headless mode, fixed-point flight and follow mode, as shown by the maker.
- Brushless Motors: per the maker's parameter sheet and pictures.
- 1, 2 or 3 Batteries: 3.7 V 2500 mAh each; about 30 minutes per battery by the maker's figure.
- Folds Down: about 152 × 86 × 88 mm folded, 278 × 288 × 88 mm unfolded, from the maker's drawing.
- In the Box: drone, screen remote, your choice of 1, 2 or 3 batteries, a memory card and USB card reader, eight spare propellers, USB charging lead, screwdriver and carry case, as shown in the maker's kit pictures.
Before you Fly
In Australia, flying a drone for fun needs no licence and no registration, but CASA's rules still apply: no higher than 120 m, at least 30 m from other people and never over anyone, one drone at a time, daylight only, in your own line of sight (not just on the screen), clear of beaches, parks and events while people are using them, and well away from any emergency. This drone weighs 223 g by the seller's figure, so within 5.5 km of a controlled airport you may fly only up to 45 m and outside the airport boundary. Weigh it yourself if that matters where you fly.
On the Farm it Counts as Work. If the drone is used for your business, checking stock, water, fences or crops included, CASA treats it as commercial flying even under 250 g: the drone must be registered and you need an operator accreditation or a remote pilot licence. National parks and some councils have their own rules too.
CASA's Know Your Drone site has the full rules. Our Before you Fly guide has the look-ups for your area and links for New Zealand, the UK, Europe and Canada. Travelling with it? Check the drone rules wherever you fly; they change at every border.
Spare Parts for This Drone
We stock three parts for the XT606: XT606 Spare Propellers (16 or 32, white-tipped like the originals), an XT606 Spare Screen Remote and an XT606 Spare Camera. Other parts, the arms, body shell and batteries on their own, are not stocked, and BushLine does not offer a repair service. We can't promise how long the parts we do stock will stay available.
Limits
We don't Claim 4K. The maker's own parameter sheet says only "HD". Its sales pictures and the seller's list say 4K, but we have not been able to confirm it, so we don't print a video resolution.
Two Different Range Figures. The maker's pictures say 1,200 m of control and 1,000 m of video; the seller's own list says 500 m. We have not tested either. In Australia you must keep the drone in your own sight anyway, which on a drone this small comes well before either figure.
It is Small, and Wind is the Enemy. The seller lists its wind resistance as under 10 km/h. On a breezy day, leave it in the case.
Obstacle Avoidance is Not a Safety Net. The seller lists visual obstacle avoidance, but neither the maker nor the seller says what it can see or from which directions. Fly as though it can't see anything.
No Water Rating. None is published. Don't fly it in rain or land it in wet grass.
The Weight Comes from the Seller. 223 g is the seller's figure and is not on the maker's parameter sheet; the box is marked 250 g. If the 250 g line matters where you fly, weigh it.
Q & A
Do I Need a Licence to Fly it?
Not for fun in Australia: no licence and no registration, but CASA's rules apply (see Before you Fly above). Flying it for your business, including on the farm, means registering the drone and getting an operator accreditation or a remote pilot licence.
Do I Need my Phone?
No. The picture shows on the screen built into the remote. The maker says phone viewing is also supported; the app is not named by the supplier.
How Long does a Battery Last?
The maker says about 30 minutes per battery. That is a best-case figure; wind, cold and hard flying all cut it. Charging time is not specified by the supplier.
Where do the Photos and Video Go?
To the memory card in the drone or to your phone's photo album, by the maker's description. A memory card and USB card reader are in the box; the card's size is not specified.
Can I Buy Parts for it Later?
Propellers, the screen remote and the camera, yes: XT606 Spare Propellers, XT606 Spare Screen Remote and XT606 Spare Camera. Batteries only come with the drone, which is why there are 1, 2 and 3-battery options.
How Long does Delivery Take?
Free Standard Delivery. Allow 5 to 10 working days from the day you order. Allow 1–2 days for fulfilment. Regional and remote addresses can take longer. Ordering from outside Australia? Import duty and tax on arrival are yours to pay.
