Waterproof Warm Dog Jacket Vest

Cold, wet dog. One coat, one clip, done.

Winter walk, the drizzle sets in, and the dog is shivering before you get back to the ute. So you cut the walk short — and the dog that needed the run is the one that misses out.

Then there is the other job. Wrestling a separate harness onto a wet, wriggling dog in the rain with the lead in your teeth. Two bits of kit for one walk, and one of them is always in the other vehicle.

This is a padded winter coat with the harness already built into it. Lay it on, zip the side, clip the lead to the metal D–rings on the back and go. The shell sheds drizzle and knocks the wind off, the lining is polar fleece, and the harness webbing carries a reflective stripe so headlights pick the dog up.

Read the sizing before you order. This runs small. XL is the largest size we stock and it fits a dog with a 340 mm back and a 480 mm chest — a Jack Russell or a small beagle, not the retriever in the supplier's photographs. Get a tape on your dog first; the chart is in the Specs tab.

What It Does

• Keeps the chill off: quilted polyester shell over a polar fleece lining, for a dog that feels the cold once the sun drops.
• Sheds drizzle: the outer fabric carries a water–repellent finish, so light rain beads and rolls off instead of soaking straight in.
• Blocks the wind: a closed padded panel over the chest and back stops wind stripping heat off the dog.
• Takes the lead itself: twin metal D–rings on reinforced webbing across the back, so the coat replaces the harness instead of fighting with it.
• Shows up after dark: reflective stripes run the length of the harness webbing on every colourway.
• Goes on quickly: a full–length side zip and a side–release buckle mean it opens right out and wraps on.

Limits

It is not waterproof, and we are not going to call it that. The supplier’s artwork says “waterproof fabric” and the product title still carries the word. Nothing supports it. There is no hydrostatic head figure anywhere, the seams are stitched rather than taped, the quilting stitches straight through the shell in a dozen places, and the zips are ordinary coil zips with no laminate behind them. What it actually does is bead drizzle and light rain for a while. Stand in steady rain long enough and it will wet through. Treat it as water resistant and it will not let you down.

There is no warmth rating. “Warm” describes the fleece and the padding; it is not a number. The supplier states no °C figure and no fill weight, so we cannot tell you what temperature it is good to. Nor is it a substitute for a coat on a dog that is genuinely cold–intolerant in an alpine winter.

The D–rings have no load rating. They are metal and they sit on reinforced webbing, and the supplier states a lead attaches to them. But no load figure is published, no test standard is quoted and nothing is marked on the hardware. So: fine as a walking harness for a dog that walks on a loose lead. Not a restraint for a dog that lunges or throws its full weight into a harness, not a vehicle restraint, and not a tie–out point.

It is not a hi–vis garment. The reflective is a stripe on the harness webbing only — the body panels have none. No part of this coat is tested or marked to AS/NZS 1906.4, AS/NZS 4602.1 or any other retroreflective standard, and no standard is printed on it. It helps a driver see your dog sooner. It does not make your dog conspicuous.

It runs small, and big dogs are not covered. The supplier makes this style up to 5XL. The range stocked here stops at XL — a 340 mm back and a 480 mm chest. If your dog measures past that, this is the wrong size run for you.

No dog weight is published for any size. The supplier gives back, chest and neck measurements and nothing else. That is the honest position, and weight is a poor guide to fit anyway: two dogs of the same weight can be 100 mm apart across the chest. Measure the dog.

Q & A

How do I work out which size to order?

Two measurements with a soft tape. Chest girth — right around the deepest part of the ribs, just behind the front legs, snug but not pulled tight. Back length — from the base of the neck where a collar sits, to the base of the tail. Match the chest first, then check the back length. If your dog lands between two sizes, take the larger one. Will it fit a labrador, a kelpie or a border collie?

No. XL, the largest size stocked, is a 340 mm back and a 480 mm chest — that is a Jack Russell or a small beagle. The big dogs in the supplier’s photographs are wearing sizes above the range sold here. Breeds vary enormously in any case; two kelpies can be 100 mm apart across the chest. Go by the tape, not the breed name.

Can I clip the lead straight to the coat?

Yes. There are two metal D–rings on the webbing across the back and the supplier states a lead attaches to them. No load rating is published for the hardware, so it suits a dog that walks on a loose lead rather than one that hits the end of it at full speed.

Will it keep my dog dry in real rain?

In drizzle or a passing shower, for a while — the shell beads water. In steady rain, no. The seams are stitched rather than taped and the quilting perforates the shell, so water gets in at the stitch lines eventually. It is a warm coat that shrugs off light rain, not a wet–weather shell.

How does it go on and off?

A full–length zip runs down one side and the harness has a side–release buckle. Undo both, lay the coat over the dog’s back, front legs through, zip it up and clip the buckle. The webbing sliders let you take up the slack once it is on.

Can it go through the washing machine?

The supplier’s care instruction is a gentle machine cycle and line dry. No figure is published for how many washes the water–repellent finish survives, so expect the beading to fall off over time as it does on any treated fabric.

Size Chart

The supplier’s published chart. These are your dog’s measurements, not the flat garment. Millimetres are given alongside centimetres because most tapes are marked in cm.

The supplier states the chart is measured by hand and allows a tolerance of 1–3 cm (10–30 mm). No dog weight range is published for any size — back length and chest girth are what decide the fit. Breed names are no help either: measure your own dog and match the chest first.
