Another watch flat before smoko. If your last one was a smart watch, you know the drill — notifications you never asked for, a screen you cannot read in glare, and a charger sitting in the other bag. Some days you just want the time, the date and a stopwatch that works.

The CURREN 8314 is a plain analogue quartz chronograph. A big 45 mm dial you can read at arm's length, an alloy case with a stainless steel back, a mineral glass window and a 24 mm leather band with CURREN's metal plate riveted across it. Six colourways, from a quiet black-on-grey to a red that will not get lost on the bench.

It is honest gear at an honest price: a battery watch that looks the part at the pub or out bush. It is not a dive watch and it is not a smartwatch — the Limits tab spells both out.

What It Does

• Time at a glance: raised numerals and contrast hands on a 45 mm dial — readable at arm's length in most light.
• Stopwatch on your wrist: chronograph pushers for start, stop and reset — time a run, a pour or a brew without pulling your phone out.
• Date without thinking: a calendar window on the dial, set from the crown.
• 24-hour sub-dial: handy on nights and swings, when 6 could mean either end of the day.
• Shrugs off the weather: rated 30 m (3 ATM), which covers rain and splashes. Swimming and showers are not covered — see Limits.

Limits

Straight up, here is what this watch is not:

• Not for swimming or showering: on the supplier's own conditions chart, the 30 m (3 ATM) rating ticks raindrops and rain only. No pool, no surf, no shower, no bath — and the chart does not tick the car wash either.
• Not a dive watch: the "30 m" sounds like a depth, but 3 ATM is a splash rating, not a depth you can take it to.
• Not a smartwatch: no notifications, no step count, no GPS. For most buyers that is the point — but if you want those, pick a smartwatch instead.
• Leather grade not stated: the supplier lists the band as leather but does not grade it, and no grade is stamped on the strap. Treat it as everyday leather — and keep it out of the water regardless.
• Battery life not stated: it is a standard quartz battery watch, but the supplier does not specify the battery type or expected life.

Q & A

Can I swim or shower in it?

No. The supplier's water-resistance chart ticks raindrops and rain for the 3 ATM rating and nothing else. Take it off before the pool, the surf, the shower or the bath.

Do the small dials actually work?

The supplier's function diagrams show all of them driven — a 24-hour display plus chronograph counters, with pushers for start, stop and reset, and a separate date window. Two of the supplier's diagrams label the counters differently, so we will not swear to which counter counts what — but none of them are painted on.

How big is it on the wrist?

Big. The dial is 45 mm across and the case 13 mm thick, so it wears like a proper tool watch. Overall length is 240 mm, which gives it room on a larger wrist.

Is the band real leather?

The supplier states leather on its spec panel, and that is as far as we can verify — no grade is stamped on the strap itself. It is 24 mm wide with a standard pin buckle, so fitting any 24 mm replacement strap later is easy.

Does it need charging or an app?

No. It is a quartz battery watch — set the time and date from the crown and wear it. When the battery eventually runs down, any watch shop or jeweller can swap it.

Which colour is which?

The first word is the case, the second is the dial or its markers. Black yellow is a black case with sand-yellow numerals on a brown band; silver blue is a silver case with a blue dial; black red runs a red strap to match its markers. Every variant is photographed in the gallery.
