The pliers you've actually got on you.

The jobs that stop you are rarely big ones. A screw backs itself out of a battery cover, a zip pull lets go, a fish hook needs the barb pinched flat, a blister pack will not open — and the proper tools are in the shed, the ute or another postcode.

This is a fold-up set of mini pliers that lives on your keys or in a pack pocket, so the two-minute fix happens on the spot. Fold the handles back and you have spring-loaded plier jaws with a serrated grip and a fine tip. Folded away inside the handles are a small knife blade, a flat screwdriver, a cross-head screwdriver and a nail file.

Be clear about what you are buying. Closed, it is about 50 mm long and weighs roughly 41 g — "multitool" here describes the tool list, not the leverage. It will pinch, grip, trim and tighten; it will not shift a seized bolt or replace the pliers in your toolbox. It earns its keep by being on you when the toolbox is not.

Limits

This is a convenience tool, not a workshop tool. The honest list of what it will not do:

• No real leverage: handles this short cannot undo a seized bolt, a rusted screw or a tight hose clamp. That is physics, not a fault.
• The blade does not lock: every fold-out tool is a friction fold — no locking mechanism is visible in the photos and none is listed by the supplier. Never put your weight behind the blade.
• Not an electrical tool: there is no insulated grip and no crimper. Keep it away from live circuits.
• It counts as a knife: it carries a real blade, so it cannot fly in carry-on luggage and the usual rules on carrying a knife apply.
• Steel grade unknown: "stainless" is the supplier's description, not a tested grade. Rinse it after saltwater fishing and give the pivot the odd drop of oil.

Q & A

Does the knife blade lock open?

No. All four fold-out tools are friction folds, the same as a cheap pocket knife. Cut away from yourself and fold the blade back before you pocket it.

Will it undo a seized or rusted screw?

No. The drivers suit small, lightly tightened screws — battery covers, spectacle hinges, reel seats. Anything seized needs a full-size driver with real torque behind it.

What is the difference between the two versions?

The tool is identical. The Non Keyring Version hangs on a small bead chain; the Key Ring Version adds a link chain and split ring so it can live with your keys.

Can I take it on a plane?

Not in carry-on — it contains a knife blade. Checked baggage only.

Is it really stainless steel?

The supplier states stainless steel and prints it on the product artwork, but no grade is marked on the tool and we have not had it tested. Treat it as keyring-tool steel: keep it dry and it will look after you.

How big is it, honestly?

About 50 mm long closed — roughly the length of a house key — and around 80 mm with the pliers out. At about 41 g you will forget it is on your keys until you need it.
