Hands full, phone flat, and you still need the time.

Your hands are covered in grease, you are three rungs up a ladder, or the phone is dead in the ute. Every one of those turns "what is the time?" into a job of its own. And when you are timing a soak, a set, a burn or a shift change, near enough is not good enough — you write the wrong number in the book, and the bloke on the next shift works off it.

A watch on your wrist does not need unlocking, does not need a charger on the bedside table, and does not care that your fingers are filthy. This one is a plain quartz chronograph: hours, minutes, a date window, and a stopwatch you start, stop and reset with the two pushers either side of the crown.

Be straight about what it is, though. It is a smart casual watch — alloy case, stainless steel bracelet, 43 mm dial. The supplier rates it 3 ATM, and the supplier's own conditions chart ticks water drops and rain and leaves everything else blank. Wear it in the weather. Take it off before you get in the water.

What It Does

• Tells the time hands-free: a 43 mm dial with big applied markers, read at a glance with a glove on and nothing to unlock.
• Times a job: minute and second chronograph subdials, run from the start/stop pusher above the crown and the reset pusher below it.
• Keeps the date: a calendar window on the dial, set from the crown.
• Reads 24-hour: a separate 24-hour subdial, which earns its keep on a roster that runs through midnight.
• Handles the weather: rated 3 ATM, so rain on the walk to the ute and a splash at the wash trough are inside what it is built for.
• Runs on a battery: quartz movement — nothing to wind, nothing to plug in, no nightly charge.

Key Features

• Two chrono pushers: start/stop above the crown, reset below, so timing a task is a thumb job.

Limits

It is not a swimming watch and it is not a diving watch. The supplier's own conditions chart marks 3 ATM against water drops and rain only. Car wash, shower, swim, strenuous exercise, shallow dive and diving depth are all left blank on that chart. We are not going to call it waterproof. Take it off before a shower, a swim, a surf or a dive.

The case is alloy, not stainless steel. Only the bracelet is stainless steel. Plated alloy marks and wears through where it rubs, and it will not take mine-site abuse the way a tool watch does. This is a smart casual watch, not a knockabout.

No standard is printed on it and none was sighted. There is no ISO 22810 water-resistance mark, no shock or antimagnetic standard, and no test certificate came with it. The 3 ATM figure is the supplier's stated rating, not a tested one, and it applies to a watch that is new and sealed.

It is not a smart watch. No steps, no heart rate, no notifications, no GPS, no phone pairing. It tells the time, times a task and shows the date. That is the whole list, and if a fitness tracker is what you are after, one of our smart watches is the one to look at instead.

Battery and luminous are not specified. The supplier does not publish the cell type, how long it lasts, or whether the hands glow in the dark. Do not buy it assuming either. And when the battery is changed the case has to be opened, so the water-resistance rating should not be assumed to survive that unless the watchmaker re-seals it.

43 mm is a big watch. With a 210 mm overall length and a 20 mm bracelet, it wears large. On a slim wrist you will be taking links out, and the supplier does not state how many links come out or what wrist range that leaves.

Q & A

Can I wear it in the shower or the pool?

No. 3 ATM covers rain, splashes and hand washing. The supplier's own chart leaves shower, swim and dive unticked, and hot water is worse again because it works the seals. Take it off and put it on the bench.

Does the stopwatch actually work, or are the subdials just for looks?

It works. The supplier's function diagram labels the pusher above the crown as start/stop, the pusher below it as reset, and names two of the three subdials minute chronograph and second chronograph. The third is a 24-hour dial.

Is the whole watch stainless steel?

No. The bracelet is stainless steel, the case is alloy. The supplier's detail panel says so in as many words, and the old listing here was loose about it. If you want a solid steel case, this is not that watch.

Will it fit my wrist?

The whole thing measures 210 mm end to end and the bracelet is 20 mm wide. Anything under about a 180 mm wrist will want links taken out, which is a five-minute job for a watchmaker or a link-pin tool. The supplier does not publish an adjustment range.

Will it pair with my phone?

No. It is a battery-powered analogue quartz watch with hands. Nothing to connect, nothing to update, nothing to go obsolete.

How long will it take to get here?
