Your cap and your ponytail have never got on.

Pull an ordinary cap on over a ponytail and one of two things happens. Either the tail gets squashed flat under the closure strap and you end up with a kink in your hair, or you shove it out through the gap in the strap and the cap sits crooked on your head for the rest of the day. Put your hair up in a bun and it is worse again — the cap will not seat at all, so it comes off, and you spend the afternoon squinting.

This cap has no back panel. The whole rear of the crown is open from the top seam down, and two flat fabric straps cross over each other in an X across that opening. A high ponytail comes out through the gap at the top. A lower tail, a bun or a plait goes through the middle, where the crossed straps spread apart to make room. A bottom strap with a hook-and-loop tab draws the whole back in to your head.

The front two panels are solid; the sides and the rear are laser-perforated with fine vent holes, and there is a mesh lining inside the crown. The inner care label states 80% nylon and 20% polyester. It is an unstructured cap — there is no stiffener behind the front panel — so it squashes into a pack or a glovebox and comes back out without a permanent crease.

What It Does
  • Takes a high ponytail: the opening runs right up to the crown seam, so a tail worn high sits above the crossed straps instead of being flattened under a closure.
  • Takes a bun or a plait: the two straps cross rather than meet, so they pull apart around a thicker bundle of hair and close back over it.
  • Vents through the shell: laser-perforated side and rear panels plus an open back, rather than a solid rear panel sitting against a hot neck.
  • Adjusts on the strap: the hook-and-loop tab on the bottom strap sets the fit, and it can be moved with one hand while the cap is on.
  • Packs without a crease: unstructured crown and a soft brim, so it rolls into a pack, a crib bag or a door pocket.
  • Shades your face: a pre-curved brim keeps the sun off your face and out of your eyes while you are working or walking.
Key Features
  • Open rear panel: no fabric across the back of the crown — the opening runs from the top seam down to the bottom strap.
  • Crossed strap closure: two flat fabric straps sewn across the opening in an X, so hair can pass above them, between them or below them.
  • Hook-and-loop adjuster: a tab on the bottom strap — not a plastic snapback, and not a metal slide buckle.
  • Laser-perforated panels: fine vent holes through the side and rear fabric; the two front panels are left solid.
  • Mesh crown lining: a perforated mesh lining and a fabric sweatband sit inside the crown.
  • Unstructured crown: no stiffener behind the front panel, and a mid-profile shape that sits low rather than standing tall.
  • Pre-curved brim: shaped out of the packet, with rows of top-stitching through it.
  • Nylon and polyester shell: the inner care label states 80% nylon, 20% polyester, and the same label reads made in China.
  • Eight colours: beige, light grey, white, rose red, blue, navy blue, black and dark grey.
  • One size: a single size across every colour, adjusted on the rear strap.

More headwear in the hats, caps and beanies collection.

Limits

Here is what this cap will not do.

  • It does not cover the back of your head: the rear panel is open by design. The scalp behind the crown, and the parting under the opening, get no cover from the cap at all.
  • No sun rating: no UPF number is printed on the cap and the supplier states none. The brim shades your face; treat it as shade and nothing more.
  • It is not protective gear: a soft unstructured cap is not a bump cap and not a hard hat. It carries no standard marking of any kind, and none is claimed.
  • One size only: there are no fitted sizes. The only adjustment is the hook-and-loop tab on the rear strap, and our supplier states no head circumference figure.
  • A very low tail sits under the strap: the bottom strap is the lowest point of the opening, so hair worn low at the nape comes out beneath it rather than through the criss-cross.
  • Quick dry is a fabric type, not a time: nylon and polyester shed water faster than cotton, but no drying time is published, and this is not a waterproof hat.
  • Nothing fastens it to your head: there is no chin cord and no clip. In strong wind, a cap is still a cap.

Q & A

Will it work with a bun, or only a ponytail?

Both. The straps cross over each other rather than butting together, so they spread apart to let a bun through and sit back over it. A high, tight bun is the easiest. A very large low bun will push the straps wide and the cap will sit further forward on your head.

Is the back a simple hole, or something cleverer?

Something cleverer, and it is the whole point of the cap. The rear of the crown is open, and two flat fabric straps cross in an X over the gap. That gives you three ways through — over the top of the X for a high tail, between the crossed straps for a bun or a plait, and under them for a lower tail.

How does it do up?

A hook-and-loop tab on the bottom strap. Not a plastic snapback, whatever you have read elsewhere, and not a metal slide buckle. You can move it with one hand with the cap still on.

What size head does it fit?

It is sold as one size and our supplier states no measurement. Other sellers listing the same cap put the adjustable range at roughly 560 to 580 mm around the head, which is an ordinary adult range — but that is their figure, not one we can confirm. Measure yours before you rely on it.

What is it actually made of?

The care label sewn inside the crown reads 80% nylon and 20% polyester, made in China. The side and rear panels are laser-perforated through that fabric, and there is a separate mesh lining inside the crown.

How long will it take to arrive?

Ten to fourteen days from the day you order, and we say allow up to three weeks. Regional and remote addresses run longer again. Shipping is free to Australia and New Zealand.
