You packed three litres for a day walk and drank two by lunch. Or the ute's bogged on a back track and the water jerry is empty. The creek is right beside you, but it's brown and you don't know what's upstream. Boiling it means a stove, fuel and twenty minutes you may not have.

This is a pocket filter straw: you put one end in the water and drink through the other. Inside is a hollow-fibre membrane that the maker rates at 0.01 micron. It needs no batteries, no pump and no tablets, and at 12 cm long it lives in a pack lid, a glovebox or a first-aid kit until the day you need it.

Limits

No Salt or Chemical Removal. No straw filter takes those out. Don't use it on sea water, or on water that may hold fuel, farm chemicals, mine run-off or flood water. Fresh water from creeks, rivers, lakes and tanks only.

We Hold No Lab Report for This Model. The maker publishes germ-removal percentages and a lifetime in litres. We haven't seen a test report for this exact straw, so we don't repeat those numbers. If you are unsure about a water source, boil it.

Muddy Water Slows it Down. Let silty water settle in a cup or bottle first and drink from the top.

The Colours aren't Identical. The green is printed Filterwell, the white UF Water Filter, and the red, orange and blue have black end caps printed Water Filter Straw. The maker sells all five as the same filter but only gives the size of the green one.

Can I Drink Straight from a Creek with it?

Yes, that's what it's made for: put the end in fresh water and sip. Keep the mouth end out of the water.

How Long does it Last?

The maker gives a figure we haven't been able to check, so we don't quote it. When it gets hard to draw water through, it's time for a new one.

Does it Make Bore Water or Dam Water Safe?

Not if the problem is minerals, salt or chemicals; it isn't made for those. Farm dams can carry run-off from sprays and fertiliser. Use it on fresh, flowing or clear water.

Can I Screw it Onto a Bottle?

The supplier doesn't show a bottle fitting, so treat it as a drink-through straw only.
