Extension Quick Release Hex Shank

Reach the screw your driver cannot get to.

The screw is at the back of the battery box, down inside a roof purlin, or behind the alternator bracket. Your bit is 25 mm long and the driver head is the width of your fist. You cannot get square to it.

So you do what everyone does. You come at it on an angle, the bit sits crooked in the head, it cams out under load, the head rounds off — and now you are drilling out a fastener instead of finishing the job. Either that or you pull the whole assembly off to get at one screw.

This is a plain steel bar with a 6.35 mm hex shank on one end and a 6.35 mm hex socket on the other. It drops into your drill or driver and puts your bit 60 mm, 100 mm or 150 mm further forward — square to the screw, with your knuckles out of the way. The knurled collar at the bit end pulls back so you can swap bits one-handed.

Limits

Straight up, here is what this bar will not do for you.

• No impact rating: the supplier states none and nothing is marked on the tool, so we are not calling it impact rated. A long thin bar in a hammering impact driver is exactly how extensions twist and snap. Treat it as a drill and driver accessory.
• No magnet is claimed: the collar is what holds the bit in. Nothing on the supplier artwork says the bore is magnetised, so do not count on it to hold a loose screw on the tip. A magnetised bit does that job.
• No steel grade stated: other sellers of this style call it chrome vanadium, others call it stainless, and they contradict each other. We are publishing neither. It is steel with a black finish, and that is all we can actually prove.
• Sockets do not fit: the bit end is a 6.35 mm hex opening, not a square drive. It takes hex bits and hex-shank nut setters — not 1/4" or 3/8" drive sockets.
• Length costs accuracy: the 150 mm will wander on a screw head until the bit bites, and any run-out at the chuck is magnified at the tip. Use the shortest one that reaches.
• It is a rigid bar: good for a screw straight down a hole. If the screw is around a corner, a flexible shaft or a right-angle adaptor is the shape you want instead.

Q & A

Will it fit my drill?

If your drill has a keyless chuck, yes — the 6.35 mm hex shank clamps up the same as a drill bit. If you are running an impact driver or a driver with a 1/4" quick-change chuck, the shank carries the detent groove those chucks lock onto.

Is it magnetic?

The supplier does not say, and nothing on the artwork claims a magnet. What we can see is the quick-release collar, and that is what holds the bit in place. Work on the basis that there is no magnet and use a magnetised bit if you need the screw to stay sitting on the tip.

Can I run it in an impact driver?

No impact rating is stated anywhere, so we will not tell you it is rated for one. It will physically fit a 1/4" impact driver chuck. Drive it gently if you go that way, and understand you are outside what the supplier states.

What is actually in the three-pack?

One of each length — 60 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm. The supplier artwork labels it 3PCS(60/100/150mm). The single-length options are one bar only.

Which length do I need?

The 60 mm gets your knuckles clear and still fits inside a cabinet or a switchboard. The 100 mm is the one most people reach for on general site and vehicle work. The 150 mm is for the deep stuff — battery boxes, roof cavities, down inside a frame.

Will it take a socket?

Not a drive socket. The bit end is a 6.35 mm hex opening, so it takes hex bits and hex-shank nut setters only. A square-drive socket needs a different adaptor.
