Dog in the Back, Mud Off the Seats

The dog has been in the dam, rolled in something on the beach, or just shed half its coat on the drive home. It all ends up in the back seat fabric, down the seat gaps and on the door trims, and the claws do the rest every time it turns around.

This is a soft, quilted hammock that covers the rear bench, the seat back and the gap in front of it. Clip the top straps around the rear headrests and the front straps around the front headrests and it hangs like a sling, so the dog stays on the fabric instead of dropping into the footwell. Side flaps fold down over the door trims, and a zip-open mesh window in the front panel lets the dog see you and lets the air through.

Be clear on which one you are buying. This one has no hard floor: it is fabric all the way through, so it sags into the footwell rather than bridging it. It packs down small and it costs less. If you have a big dog that wants a flat floor to stand on across the footwell, our hard-bottom rear seat protector is the one with the load-bearing base.

And be clear on what it is not. This is a cover and a barrier — it is not a restraint. Nothing here is crash tested, no standard is claimed and none is printed on it.

What it Does
  • Wet Dog, Dry Seats: mud, sand, salt water and hair land on a wipe-down quilted face instead of your seat fabric and stitching.
  • Keeps the Dog Out of the Footwell: in hammock mode the front straps hold the cover up to the front headrests, so the dog has a sling to sit in rather than a hole to slide into.
  • Door Trims Covered: the two side flaps fold down over the doors, where claws and wet fur usually land as the dog jumps in and out.
  • Dog can Still See you: a zip-open mesh window in the front panel lets the dog see into the cab and lets air from the front vents through.
  • Clean Seat for Passengers: when the dog is not coming, pull the cover out and shake it off, and the seat underneath is clean for people.
Key Features
  • Soft Hammock, No Hard Base: quilted fabric throughout. Cheaper than a hard-bottom cover, but it will not give a big dog a flat floor across the footwell.
  • Size: 1.37 m wide and 1.47 m long laid out flat, read off the supplier dimension drawing.
  • Side Flaps: one each side, 470 mm by 380 mm, to cover the door trims.
  • Mesh Window: 330 mm wide, set into the front panel, with a zip.
  • Fabric: the supplier describes a quilted 600D Oxford face with a water-resistant coating and a TPU layer underneath. Listed material: polyester.
  • Non-Slip Backing: the supplier close-up shows a mesh-textured backing it labels non-slip, to stop the cover creeping on the seat.
  • Headrest Straps: adjustable straps with snap buckles go around the rear headrests, and a second pair around the front headrests for hammock mode.
  • Seat Anchors: tuck-in anchors push down between the seat base and backrest to hold the cover in place.
  • Seatbelt Openings: hook-and-loop slots let the rear seatbelt buckles through.
  • Two Pockets: on the front panel, for a lead, a brush or a bag of treats.

Limits

What this hammock will not do, stated plainly.

  • Not a Restraint: it does not attach to the dog and it does not secure the dog. It is not crash tested, no standard is claimed and none is printed on it. A harness tested for vehicle use is a separate item, and this cover is not a substitute for one.
  • No Hard Floor: it is fabric, so in hammock mode it sags into the footwell under the dog's weight. A big dog that wants solid footing across the gap is better on the hard-bottom rear seat protector.
  • Not a Cage: the front panel is a fabric barrier, not a gate. A determined dog can still get over or around it.
  • Water Resistant, Not Waterproof: the supplier calls it waterproof and we are not going to. No IP rating and no hydrostatic head figure are given, the quilting is stitched through, and a big spill or a soaked dog sitting in one spot for a long drive will find its way through.
  • Scratch Resistant, Not Scratch Proof: the supplier title says scratch prevent. No abrasion rating is given. It is not chew proof, and a dog that sets out to wreck it will.
  • No Size or Weight Limit Given: the supplier gives no dog weight limit. Its listing even tags it for small breeds while its photos show a golden retriever, so judge it by the measurements, not the pictures.
  • Passengers & the Hammock: the supplier pictures a person sharing the seat with the dog but gives no instructions for it. With the front panel up as a hammock, the footwell is closed off, so for a full load of passengers take the cover out.
  • Check your Back Seat: 1.37 m across the bench is the figure to measure against. A narrower bench will bunch at the sides; a much wider one will leave the edges bare.

Q & A

How is This Different from your Hard-Bottom Seat Cover?

This one is a soft hammock: quilted fabric, no hard base, and cheaper. Our hard-bottom rear seat protector has load-bearing plates in a five-layer base, so it bridges the footwell as a flat floor. Pick the hammock for keeping mess off the seats; pick the hard-bottom one if your dog needs a solid floor to stand on.

Will This Hold my Dog if I Have to Stop Hard?

No. It is a cover and a barrier, nothing more. It does not attach to the dog, it is not crash tested and no standard is claimed for it. If you want the dog secured, use a harness rated and tested for vehicle use as well as the cover.

Will it Fit my Dual Cab or SUV?

Measure your back seat. Laid flat it is 1.37 m wide and 1.47 m long, with side flaps 470 mm by 380 mm. The supplier pictures it in sedans, family cars, SUVs and a pick-up. You need headrests front and rear for the straps to go around.

Can I Still Use the Rear Seatbelts?

There are hook-and-loop openings in the cover so the rear seatbelt buckles come through it. With the front panel up as a hammock the footwell is closed off, so for passengers it is easier to take the cover out.

How do I Clean it?

Shake it out, vacuum it, wipe it down or hose it off and hang it to dry. The supplier shows it going in a washing machine but gives no temperature or cycle, so we would not guess at a machine wash.

How Long will it Take to Get Here?

Free delivery. Allow 5 to 10 working days from the date of your order, plus 1–2 days for fulfilment. Regional and remote addresses can take longer.
