Fly Fishing Combo Kit: Rod, Reel, Line, Flies and Case

Fish are rising to something the size of a match head, and what is in the back of the rig is a surf rod and a bag of pilchards. Fly gear is the answer, and buying it piece by piece is where most people quietly give up.

The money is not the problem. The matching is. Rod weight has to suit the line, the line has to suit the reel, then there is backing to wind on, a leader to tie, flies to pick and something to carry the lot in. Get one link in that chain wrong and the whole outfit casts like a wet rope — and you blame yourself instead of the gear.

This is that job done at the factory. Pick a rod weight and the rest turns up already matched: a Maxcatch Extreme four-piece carbon rod, an ECO machined aluminium reel wound with backing, weight-forward floating line and a knotless tapered leader, twelve hand-tied flies in a sealed box, a nipper on a retractor, a neoprene reel cover, and an 800mm padded bag that swallows the whole lot.

The bag earns its place. A rod that lives loose in the back of a ute gets gear stacked on it, and a stacked-on rod is a snapped tip. A snapped tip on the Friday is a weekend with no fishing in it.

What It Does

• Turns up ready to cast: backing, weight-forward floating line and a knotless tapered leader are already wound on the reel. Put the rod together, thread the guides, tie on a fly.
• Matches itself: the reel and the line are sized to the rod weight you choose, so nothing in the chain is fighting anything else.
• Packs down to 800mm: four sections drop into a padded bag that fits behind a ute seat or across the back of a quad instead of rattling loose in the tray.
• Winds either hand: pull the spool, reverse the one-way bearing, put the spool back. No extra parts to buy.
• Carries its own kit: the zipped end pocket takes the reel in its neoprene cover, and the fly box, nipper and retractor ride with it.
• Covers 3wt to 8wt: seven builds off the same kit, from a 2.5m 3wt for tight creek work to a 2.7m 8wt for bigger, windier water.

• 800mm padded bag: divided sleeves so the sections do not knock together, a 180mm zipped end pocket and a shoulder strap.

Limits

Everything needed to make a cast is in the box. A few things are not, and none of them are hiding in the bag:

• A fishing licence: freshwater angling is licensed across most of Australia and all of New Zealand. That sits between you and your own state or region.
• Tippet: the tapered leader is a consumable. Every fly change shortens it, and once it is short you need a tippet spool to build it back.
• Floatant and sinkant: dry flies need dressing to keep sitting up, and none is included.
• Net, waders, glasses: no landing net, no waders, no boots and no polarised glasses.

The leader is a trout leader. The one on the supplier's own artwork is a Phantom knotless tapered nylon, 2.7m, 4X, rated 2.2kg. That is right for the 3wt through to the 6wt. Buy the 7wt or 8wt for bigger fish and plan on heavier tippet from the start, because the supplier does not state that the leader changes with rod weight.

The fly box is not a dive case. The supplier calls it waterproof and there is a moulded gasket around the rim, so it will shrug off rain, spray and a wet hand. No immersion rating, no depth and no IP figure is stated anywhere, and nothing says the box floats. Do not count on it after a swim, and do not assume you get it back if you drop it in moving water.

Fast is not the same as forgiving. Every rod in this series is a fast action — the supplier's own chart marks all of them Fast. A fast blank rewards a crisp casting stroke and punishes a lazy one, so a first-time caster works harder for the first few sessions than they would on a slower rod. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to give yourself an afternoon on the grass before you drive four hours to a river.

No drag figure, and no warranty. The reel runs a real Teflon disc and stainless drag, but Maxcatch does not publish a maximum drag force for it, so we are not going to print one. Treat it as a trout-class drag on a trout-class reel. And there is no warranty offered with this kit — returns cover faulty or not-as-described items only.

Salt is hard on it. Nothing in the supplier's data says this reel is sealed or rated for saltwater. If you take the 7wt or 8wt onto the flats, rinse it in fresh water the same day.

Q & A

Which rod weight should I pick?

Small streams and small trout, take the 2.5m 3wt or a 4wt. The 2.7m 5wt is the one most people should buy — it will fish a dry fly on a spring creek and still turn over a weighted nymph on a windy lake. Step up to the 6wt for bigger water and more wind, and the 7wt or 8wt if you are chasing something heavier or throwing bigger flies.

Which reel comes with my rod?

Maxcatch sizes the ECO reel by line weight, so it follows the rod you pick: the 3/4 covers the 3wt and 4wt builds, the 5/6 covers the 5wt and 6wt, and the 7/8 covers the 7wt and 8wt. It arrives already wound with backing and the matching floating line.

Why are there two 4wt options?

One is 2.55m and one is 2.7m. The shorter rod is easier to work under trees and on narrow creeks. The longer one mends line better and lifts more of it off the water. Same weight rating, different job.

Can I wind with my left hand?

Yes, and you do not need to buy anything to do it. Take the spool off, reverse the one-way bearing, put the spool back on. The supplier sets out the three steps on the reel artwork in the gallery.

Is it really ready to cast out of the box?

The reel turns up wound with backing, floating line and a tapered leader. You still have to join the four sections, thread the line through the guides and tie a fly on. Ten minutes at the tailgate, not an afternoon at the kitchen table.
