Pitching in the dark, in the rain, with a torch in your teeth.

You get in late, the light has gone, the wind has come up, and you are threading shock-corded poles through sleeves while everyone else sits in the car. That is the part of camping nobody misses.

This one is a cabin tent on telescopic automatic poles. The frame stays in the tent. You spread it out, lift the joints until they lock, and it stands up — then you peg it and you are done. It is the same idea as a pop-up gazebo rather than a traditional pole tent, and it is the reason to buy this over something cheaper.

Inside it is 2.6 m long, 2.3 m wide and 1.8 m high. That height matters more than the floor area does: you can stand up and get dressed properly instead of crouching. It is rated 3 to 4 people, which in practice means two adults and their gear in comfort, or four at a squeeze. There is a 2 x 1.5 m canopy off the front for a shaded spot to sit, cook or leave wet boots.

Be clear on what it is for. It weighs 10.9 kg and the poles are steel. This is a car camping tent — you drive to the site and carry it a short distance. Nobody is walking this into a campsite on their back.

What It Does

• Stands itself up: telescopic automatic poles. Lift the joints until they lock rather than threading a frame together in the dark.
• You can stand up in it: 1.8 m of headroom at the ridge, in a 2.6 x 2.3 m footprint.
• Comes with its own shade: a 2 x 1.5 m canopy extends off the front for cooking, sitting, or keeping the doorway out of the sun.
• Mesh windows: panelled windows with insect mesh, so it can be opened up on a still hot night.
• Coated on both surfaces: 150D Oxford throughout, with a titanium-gel coating on the outer and a separate PU coating on the floor.

Key Features

• 150D Oxford fabric: a heavier, more abrasion-resistant weave than the thin nylon on cheap dome tents.
• Cabin shape, not a dome: near-vertical walls, so the usable floor area is close to the measured floor area.
• Steel poles: heavier than aluminium, and stiffer. They are what makes the automatic frame work.
• One colour: brown. It is the only finish the supplier makes it in.

Limits

It is a single-layer tent. There is no separate inner tent and fly. That is why it pitches so fast, and it is also the trade-off: on a cold night you will get condensation on the inside of the fabric, and anything touching the wall will get damp. Leave the vents and windows cracked, and do not push bedding against the walls. A double-wall tent handles this better and takes ten times as long to put up.

The supplier publishes two different waterproof figures for the same fabric. The specification block says the outer is rated 2000–3000 mm and the floor 1500–2000 mm; elsewhere the same supplier says PU3000 mm and PU2000 mm. We have quoted the ranges rather than picking the flattering number. Treat it as a 2000 mm outer and you will not be disappointed. That is fine for normal rain. It is not a four-season mountain tent, whatever the listing category says.

The supplier states, in its own words, that pinholes of light may show through the coating. We are repeating that rather than hiding it: they describe small leakage points visible when the fabric is held against the light, limited to the coating layer, and say it does not affect the tent's function. They say the same about minor coating scratches or hook marks on the canopy, which is partly hand-finished. If that would bother you, buy something else — we would rather tell you now.

The supplier does not itemise what is in the bag. The canopy is held out on poles and guy lines, which you can see in the photographs, but there is no published packing list confirming the canopy poles and pegs travel with it. We are not going to promise a contents list nobody has published.

Steel poles need drying. Pack it away wet often enough and steel will rust where the coating gets chipped. Dry it out before it goes back in the shed.

No UV or UPF rating is published. Some of the supplier's marketing images talk about blocking UV. There is no measured figure behind that, so we are not going to put a number on it. It is a heavy coated fabric and it will shade you well; that is as far as we will go.

No fire rating is claimed. Keep flames, stoves and heaters outside it, as with any tent.

Q & A

How many people really fit?

The supplier says 3 to 4. The honest answer for a 2.6 x 2.3 m floor is two adults with room for gear, three comfortably, four only if everyone is happy to sleep shoulder to shoulder with the bags outside — which is what the canopy is useful for. Manufacturer person-ratings across the whole industry assume mats touching and no luggage.

How long does it actually take to put up?

The frame is the fast part — spread, lift, lock. Pegging it out and setting the canopy takes longer than the tent itself. We have not timed it ourselves and we are not going to quote a number we have not measured. It is dramatically faster than a threaded-pole tent; that much is inherent in the design.

Will it handle wind?

Cabin tents are worse in wind than domes — tall vertical walls catch more of it. Peg every point and use the guy lines. No wind rating is published, and we would not leave any tent of this style standing unattended in a real blow.

Can I fit a stretcher or a queen air bed?

A queen air bed is about 2.03 x 1.52 m, so it fits inside 2.6 x 2.3 m with room to walk around one side. Two singles fit comfortably.
