Cold ears wreck a shift before smoko.
Four in the morning, the ute is still frosted over and the wind is coming straight off the range. A hat that only covers the top of your head does nothing for the part that actually hurts. By the time you are standing at the pre-start your ears are aching, your hood is up over the top of your hearing protection, and you are not thinking about the job.
This is a knitted wool beanie with earflaps that come down over your ears and stay down. Pull it on, get on with it. One size fits all, in five colours.
It is a beanie, not a balaclava and not a helmet liner. It covers the top of your head and your ears, and that is the whole of what it claims to do. The supplier has not published a fibre percentage, a weight or a temperature rating, so we have not invented any. Where a number is missing, the Specs tab says so plainly.
What It Solves
- Pre-dawn site starts: the wind finds your ears first on a frosty pre-start, and the flaps are already down before you have walked to the light vehicle.
- Frost on the farm: feeding out or fixing a fence at first light — ears stay covered while your hands get on with the work.
- Wind off the water: there is nowhere to hide from it in an open boat, and the run home is always colder than the run out.
- First out of the swag: lighting the fire on a camp morning before the sun does anything useful for you.
- The winter dog walk: nothing dramatic — just a warm head on a cold street at six in the morning.
Key Features
- Earflaps that stay down: the flaps sit over the ears rather than folding up out of the way like a cuffed beanie.
- Knitted wool construction: sold as a wool beanie; the supplier does not publish the fibre blend or percentage, so neither do we.
- One size fits all: nothing to get wrong at the checkout — the knit stretches, and there is only the one option to pick.
- Five colours: black, black dark grey, navy blue, grey and red.
- Unisex: one beanie across the range, no separate men's and women's version.
- Nothing rigid to crush: soft knit, no brim and no frame, so it lives in a crib bag, jacket pocket or glovebox.
- Honest spec table: every figure the supplier has not stated is marked "Not specified by supplier" instead of being guessed at.
- Free delivery both sides: Australia and New Zealand, no minimum spend, 10 to 14 days from the day you order.
Limits
What this beanie will not do, stated plainly so you can decide before you buy rather than after it turns up.
- It is not waterproof: knitted wool is not a rain hat. Steady rain will soak it and it will stay damp until you dry it out.
- No temperature rating: the supplier does not publish one, so we cannot tell you how it performs at minus five. Not specified by supplier.
- No fibre percentage: it is sold as a wool beanie and the blend is not published. We are not going to print a number we cannot stand behind.
- Not rated PPE: it is a comfort item. No flame resistance, no impact rating, no site compliance claim of any kind.
- Not a helmet liner: it is not made to sit under a hard hat or a ski helmet and we have not tested it that way.
- Not a balaclava: it covers the top of your head and your ears. Your face and neck are your own problem.
- No size options: one size fits all, so if a stretch knit does not sit right on you there is no larger version to order instead.
Q & A
What size do I need?
There is no size to choose. It is one size fits all and the knit stretches to suit. The single option on the size selector above is listed as 55cm-60cm (550mm-600mm).
What percentage wool is it?
Not specified by supplier. It is sold as a wool beanie and that is as far as the published information goes. We are not going to quote a percentage we cannot stand behind — imported beanies get this wrong constantly.
Is it lined?
Yes. There is a brushed fleece lining through the crown and the earflaps — you can see it in the photographs. What fibre that lining is made from is not specified by supplier, so we have not put a name to it.
How cold will it handle?
Not specified by supplier. There is no temperature rating published for it. What we can tell you honestly is what it is — a knitted wool beanie with earflaps that covers your ears, which is more than a standard cuffed beanie does.
Can I wear it under a hard hat?
It is not designed for it and it carries no PPE rating. If your site has a rule about what goes under a helmet, follow the site rule, not this page.
How do I wash it?
Care instructions are not specified by supplier. Our own suggestion, not a manufacturer instruction: treat it as wool. Cold hand wash, no wringing, dry flat out of the sun. Do not put it through a hot machine cycle or a dryer unless you want a smaller beanie.
Which colours can I get?
Five: black, black dark grey, navy blue, grey and red. Pick from the Colour selector above.
Is it waterproof?
No. It is knitted wool. It will shrug off a light drizzle for a while and then it will wet out. If you are working in real rain you want a hood over the top of it.
What does delivery cost and how long does it take?
Free to Australia and New Zealand, no minimum spend. Most gear is 10 to 14 days from the day you place your order — that clock starts at the order, not later. Allow up to 3 weeks, and a bit longer again for regional and remote addresses. If it runs late, ring 0400 333 898 and we chase the tracking ourselves.
What if it is not right when it turns up?
If the item is faulty or not as described, your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply and we will sort it out. Contact support first rather than posting it anywhere — a returns address is issued per item.
