An elbow that grumbles all day wears you down

Rattle gun work, swinging a hammer, hauling gear in and out of a ute tray — the elbow is the joint you end up most aware of by knock-off. A plain slip-on sleeve either strangles the arm or has crept down the forearm by smoko, and once it is on there is nothing you can change about it.

This is a wrap, not a sleeve. It opens out flat, goes around the joint and closes with two hook-and-loop straps, so you set the tension yourself and change it in a couple of seconds without taking anything off.

The supplier states breathable composite diving fabric, with a perforated inner face and two stainless steel spring stays sewn in either side of the joint. An opening in the panel sits over the point of the elbow so the wrap is not bearing down on the bone.

The honest limits

• It is not a treatment: this is a support wrap. It adds compression and holds the joint firm, and that is the whole of what it does. It will not heal an injury, cure tennis elbow, or fix an underlying problem, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
• Get it looked at: if your elbow is bothering you consistently, see a doctor or a physio and find out why. Strapping up a joint you have not had looked at is a good way to keep working on something that needs a rest.
• Not a rigid brace: the two stays hold the wrap's shape. It is not hinged and it does not lock. It will not stop the joint bending.
• Not impact protection: fabric and straps. It is not a hard elbow pad and it will not take a knock against steel.
• One size only: up to 35.5 cm (355 mm) around the elbow. Above that it will not close properly, and there is no larger option.
• Sold singly: one wrap, not a pair. If you want both arms covered, order two.
• No wash instructions: not specified by supplier, and we are not going to invent a temperature for you.

How do I know it will fit me?
Run a tape around your elbow at its widest point with the arm straight. Anything up to 35.5 cm (355 mm) and it will close on you. There is one size and no other options, so if you are well over that measurement this is not the one.

Is it left or right specific?
The supplier does not state a side, and it does not need to. The wrap opens out flat, goes around the joint and closes with two straps, and the shape is symmetrical — the same unit goes on either arm.

Do I get one, or a pair?
One wrap. The pack is a single unit, not a pair, so order two if you want both arms.

Will it show under a work shirt?
Under a loose long-sleeve work shirt, mostly not — it is fabric and straps rather than a rigid brace. Under a close-fitting sleeve you will see the outline, because the strap ends and the two stays sit proud of the panel.

Will it slide down over a shift?
The straps are what hold it, not grip against the skin, so set them firm and it stays where you put it. If it is creeping down the forearm, either the straps are too loose or your arm is at the top end of the size range.

How do I wash it?
Wash instructions are not specified by supplier, so we will not quote a temperature. Practical tip either way — close the straps onto themselves before it goes in, or the hook side comes out full of lint and stops gripping.

What is it not for?
