38mm Wide Leather Belt with Double Prong Buckle

A belt that outlives the trousers.

Cheap belts all fail the same way. The strap curls and goes floppy, the holes stretch into ovals, the stitching at the buckle lets go, and the plated buckle wears back to grey metal. None of that is a disaster on its own — it is just the sort of nuisance that has you hitching your waistband up all shift, with a tool belt or a full pocket doing its best to drag it back down.

This one is a 38 mm leather strap on a double prong buckle. Two pins through two rows of holes instead of one, so the load spreads across the strap rather than tearing at a single hole. The buckle is stitched into the fold of the leather with visible thread — no rivets, no glued plate, and nothing to unscrew.

Straight up about the leather, because the word gets abused: the supplier states leather and nothing more. No grade, no tannage, no thickness. So we are not going to tell you it is full-grain vegetable-tanned anything. If the grade is the deciding factor for you, buy from a saddler who will put it in writing.

Limits

What this belt will not do, stated plainly.

• No load rating: the supplier publishes no breaking strain, working load or standard. It is a trouser belt. Do not use it for fall arrest, restraint, rescue, towing or lifting, and do not hang a loaded rigger's pouch off it and call it a tool belt.
• Leather grade unknown: full-grain, top-grain, split and bonded are different products at different prices, and the supplier does not say which this is. We will not guess, and you should not read "leather" as a quality claim.
• Thickness not stated: no thickness in millimetres is published, so we cannot tell you how stiff it will feel out of the box.
• You cannot shorten it: the buckle is stitched in and the holes are pre-punched at the tail. There is no screw to undo and no easy way to take length out. Order the right length.
• Too wide for dress loops: 38 mm will not thread through the narrow loops on suit trousers or slim-cut chinos. Measure your loops before you order.
• Not waterproof: leather does not like being soaked and then dried hard. It will survive rain; it will not survive living wet.
• Finish will change: the dyed finish scuffs, lightens on the fold and darkens where it is handled. That is leather behaving normally, not a fault.
• Longest is 1.25 m: there is nothing above that in the range. If 1.25 m is not enough strap for you, this is not your belt.

Q & A

What grade of leather is it?

Unknown, and we are not going to invent one. The supplier's material data says "leather" with no grade, no tannage and no thickness. Full-grain, top-grain, split and bonded leather are genuinely different products, and anyone who cares about the difference deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing word.

How do I choose the length?

Take a belt you already wear, thread it through the loops of the trousers you will actually wear this with, do it up where it sits comfortably, and measure from the buckle pin to the hole you use. Add roughly 120–150 mm for the tail and round up to the nearest size we stock. Do not order your trouser size — trouser sizing and belt length are not the same measurement, and a belt bought on trouser size lands short more often than not.

Will it stretch?

Leather gives a little as it beds in, so a belt that feels snug on the first day usually settles a hole looser over a few weeks. If you are between two lengths and you wear your trousers over a bit of gear, take the longer one.

Is the buckle brass?

It has a brass-tone finish in every photo, but the supplier does not state the alloy or the plating, so we list it as metal with a brass-tone finish. If you need solid brass specifically, we cannot confirm it.

Can I take the buckle off and put it on another strap?

No. It is stitched into the folded end of the leather, not held by screws or a snap. That is the stronger way to build a belt, but it does mean the buckle and the strap stay together for good.

Will 38 mm fit my trousers?

It fits the wide loops on jeans, drill trousers and cargos. It will not go through the narrow loops on dress trousers or slim chinos. Slide a tape or a ruler through one loop and check you have got 40 mm of clearance before you order.
