Keys never go missing somewhere useful. They go down the side of the ute seat, into the long grass beside the camp table, under a pile of hi-vis on the crib room bench, or into a jacket pocket you have already patted down twice. You find out about it standing at the door with an armful of gear and nowhere to put it.

Losing them is rarely the whole cost. It is the twenty minutes on your hands and knees with a phone torch, the mate sitting in the passenger seat, and the gate you meant to be through before dark.

This fob lives on the ring with the keys. When it picks up a sharp, loud noise close by — a whistle is what it is built for — it beeps and flashes its coloured LED edge until you get to it. No app, no phone, no pairing, no charging, no account. Take it out of the packet, clip it on, and it works.

What It Does

• Colour-codes a set: green, red or blue, so the ute keys and the shed keys are not the same anonymous black fob at the bottom of a bag.

Key Features

Limits

This is a whistle-and-it-beeps keyring fob. It is not a tracker, and the gap between the two is the single most important thing on this page.

It is not a Bluetooth or GPS tracker. There is no radio in it. No app, no phone pairing, no map, no location history, no alert when you walk away from your keys, and no way to find them from anywhere you cannot already hear the beeper. If what you actually want is a fob you can chase on a phone, buy one of those instead — we stock them, and they are a different tool for a different problem. No working range is stated, so we are not going to invent one. The supplier publishes no distance figure for the microphone or the beeper, and none is marked on the fob or the packaging artwork. Treat it as a same-room, same-vehicle, same-tent tool: it has to hear you, and you have to hear it back. Line of sight is not the issue — noise is. Wind, a running engine, a diesel genny or a busy workshop will beat it in both directions, and a closed car boot or a zipped pack will muffle the answer.

It reacts to loud noise, not to your particular whistle. Inside is a microphone and a trigger threshold, not voice recognition. A slammed door, a dropped tailgate, a barking dog, a loud television or somebody else whistling can set it off. That is the honest trade-off with every sound-activated finder and it is the most common complaint about the whole category, so go in knowing it. The slider switch on the top edge exists for exactly that reason — switch it off in a noisy crib room and back on when you park up.

The LED is a marker light, not a torch. The lit edge is there so you can see where the fob is in the dark. It does not throw a usable beam and it will not light a keyhole, a step or a track. If you want light to work by, carry something built for it — the Everbrite LED torch is the right tool for that job.

No water rating. The supplier states no IP rating and nothing is marked on the fob. Assume it is not sealed. Rain on the walk to the ute is one thing; a wash cycle, a boat floor or a flooded pocket is another, and there is no rating to fall back on.

No battery detail is published. The supplier does not state the cell type, the cell life, whether cells are supplied, or whether they are meant to be replaced by the owner. The shell has a seam across it, but a seam is not a stated battery specification, so every battery row in the spec table below reads "Not specified by supplier". That is what we know, and we are not filling the gap with a guess on a page you are buying from.

Q & A

Will it find my keys from the other end of the house?

Probably not, and we would rather say so now than have you find out. It has to hear you and you have to hear it, so it is a same-room, same-vehicle tool. No working distance is published anywhere on the product or its artwork, so we will not quote you one.

Does it need an app, a phone or a subscription?

None of the three. There is no Bluetooth, no wi-fi and no app in it — a microphone, a beeper, an LED and a keyring is the whole product. That is also why it still works in a valley with no signal.

Will it go off on its own?

It can, and that is the trade-off with the type. It listens for loud sound rather than for your specific whistle, so a slammed door or a barking dog can trigger it. There is a slider switch on the top edge to shut it off when that becomes a nuisance.

Can I use the light as a torch?

No. The LED lights the fob's own coloured edge so you can spot it in the dark; it does not project a beam and will not light your way. Carry a proper torch for that.

What batteries does it take, and are they included?

The supplier does not state either, and no cell type is marked on the fob or the artwork. We are not going to guess at a battery specification, so both rows in the spec table say so plainly.

Do I get more than one in the pack?

One fob per order, in green, red or blue. There is no multi-pack option here — but colour-coding two or three key sets is exactly what the colours are for.
