Cheap keyring clips bend open, rattle undone and drop whatever was on them somewhere between the ute and the camp. This is a proper screw-lock carabiner in 7075 aluminium — pear-shaped, 60 grams, with a knurled barrel you screw shut so the gate cannot open on its own.

Read the Limits tab before you buy this. We have taken "rock climbing" out of this listing on purpose, and the reason matters more than the product does.

What It Does

Holds gear, and holds it properly. Hanging a pack off a roof rack, clipping a dry bag into a kayak, running a tarp guy line, securing a jerry can, keeping a torch and a multi-tool on a belt loop where you can find them. The screw lock means it will not shake open in a moving vehicle or on a rough track. Five colours, and singly, in twos or in fives.

• Screw-lock gate: a knurled barrel that screws over the gate, so it does not vibrate or snag its way open.
• Pear shape: wide at the top, so it takes several straps or loops without them jamming against the gate.
• 7075 aluminium: the supplier's stated alloy. Light for its size at 60 grams.

Limits

Do not use this for climbing, abseiling, rope access, fall arrest, or anything else that holds a person's weight. This listing used to be titled "Professional Rock Climbing Carabiner 22KN". We have changed it, and here is the honest reason: no climbing certification has been verified for this product. There is a small mark stamped on the spine in the supplier's own photographs, but it cannot be read from the images we have, and no certificate, no EN standard number and no notified body has ever been supplied to us.

XINDA is a real climbing brand and this may well be certified gear. But "may well be" is not good enough for something a person hangs off. If you need life-supporting equipment, buy it from a shop that puts the EN 12275 or EN 362 certificate in your hand. That is not us, on this product, today.

• The 22 kN figure is the supplier's, not ours: we have not tested it and we have not seen it certified. Do not size anything off it.
• Not fall-arrest equipment: it is not rated, marked or sold for working at height, and it must not go into a harness, a lanyard or an anchor.
• Not for lifting or rigging over people: no load rating we can stand behind means no overhead work, full stop.
• Aluminium wears: a rope or strap running under load will groove any aluminium carabiner over time. Check it and retire it when it shows a wear notch.
• Keep the gate shut and loaded correctly: any carabiner is far weaker across the gate than along its spine, and weaker again with the gate open.

Q & A

Why did you take "rock climbing" out of the title?
Because we cannot verify that it is certified climbing protection, and selling it under that name would tell you it is safe to hang off. It might be. We do not know, so we will not say it.

So what is it good for?
Everything that is not holding a person up. Gear on packs and racks, dry bags, tarps, jerry cans, tools on a belt, a dog lead, kayak rigging. It is a strong, well-made clip.

Is the 22 kN real?
It is what the supplier states. We have no test result and no certificate, so we quote it as their figure and tell you not to rely on it.

Which pack size is best value?
The five-pack, per clip. Most people who buy one end up wanting more of them.

What is the difference between the colours?
Colour only. Handy for telling at a glance which clip is holding what.
