5.5mm-19mm Hex Socket Set

Fifteen deep sockets that live in your drill.

Half under a trailer with a shifter, backing a nut off a length of threaded rod that runs on well past it. Six turns to the flat, reset the jaws, six more. A job that should take a minute takes ten, and by the fourth bracket you have stopped doing them up properly and started nipping them up.

That is where it goes wrong. A fastener that is nipped up rather than done up walks off with vibration. The bracket moves, the rack shifts on the corrugations, the load goes with it, and you find out about it a long way from a workshop and a long way from help.

These are nut driver sockets, not hand sockets. Fifteen of them, 5.5 mm to 19 mm across the flats, every one 80 mm long with a 34 mm deep bore so it swallows a bolt end instead of stopping on top of it. The shank is a 1/4" (6.35 mm) hex, the same fitting as a driver bit, so they drop straight into a drill, a driver or a hand bit holder. No ratchet, no extension bar, no skinned knuckles.

What It Does

• Runs nuts off a drill: the whole point of the set. Chuck it up, hold it square, and the nut spins down instead of being wound by hand.
• Reaches down a thread: the 34 mm bore clears a bolt end that a shallow socket would simply sit on top of.
• Covers the metric range: 5.5 mm, then every whole millimetre from 6 mm to 19 mm, so there is no gap to go hunting for.
• Swaps in a second: a 1/4" hex shank in a keyless chuck or a quick-change holder, same as any driver bit.
• Grips six flats: a six-point bore takes hold of the flats of the nut rather than rounding off its corners.
• Works by hand too: the hex shank fits a screwdriver-style bit holder for the last nip when you want to feel it.

Limits

What this set will not do, stated plainly.

• No impact rating: the shank will physically fit an impact driver, but nothing on these tools or in the supplier specification states an impact duty, a hardness figure or a torque limit. Treat them as drill-driver and hand tools.
• No steel grade on ours: no grade is stamped on the sockets and the supplier spec panel does not name one. Other sellers of the same fifteen-piece set describe it as chrome vanadium; we have no marking or supplier statement that confirms it, so we are not going to publish it as fact.
• Not a torque tool: a drill has no idea how tight a fastener is. Run the nut down with this, then set it properly with a torque wrench where the torque actually matters.
• No magnet stated: the supplier does not list these as magnetic, so work on the basis that a loose nut will not be held in the bore.
• Metric only: there are no AF or imperial sizes in the set, and nothing below 5.5 mm or above 19 mm.
• Sockets and nothing else: no handle, no extension bar, no bit holder and no adaptor are included. Fifteen sockets is the whole set. The earlier version of this listing said a power screwdriver handle came with it, and that was wrong.
• The bore has a floor: 34 mm deep. A stud or bolt sticking out further than that will bottom out and the socket will stop pulling down.
• They are long: 80 mm of socket plus the chuck in front of it. In a tight engine bay or a shallow cavity, a stubby socket on a ratchet will still beat this.

Q & A

Can I run these on a rattle gun?

They will fit one. A 1/4" hex impact driver chuck takes them. But no impact rating, hardness figure or torque limit is marked on the sockets or stated by the supplier, so we cannot tell you they are built for it. If you are working on wheel nuts or anything where a socket letting go would hurt someone, use proper black impact sockets on a square drive.

Exactly which sizes do I get?

Fifteen: 5.5 mm, then 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 mm across the flats. The size is stamped on the side of each socket. The full list is in the Specs tab.

Will they fit my drill?

If the drill has a keyless chuck or takes 1/4" hex driver bits, yes. The shank is a 6.35 mm hex with a quick-change groove, which is the standard driver bit fitting. They will not go in a square drive ratchet.

Are these Allen key bits?

No. The hex is the hole, not the tip. These are six-point sockets that go over a nut or a bolt head. If you need something that goes into a socket head cap screw, this is the wrong tool.

What is the difference between the two options?

The sockets are the same. One option ships the fifteen pieces on their own, the other ships them in a blow-moulded case with a foam tray cut for each size.
