Winter Thermal Fleece Half Face Mask with Ear Covers

Cold wind on your face ends the day early.

Wind chill gets the ears and the nose first. Ten minutes on a quad, a sled or a bike at any speed and the skin over your cheekbones stops feeling like yours. You start squinting, you start breathing down inside your collar, and you knock off an hour before you meant to.

This is a fleece half mask. It sits from the bridge of the nose down, wraps under the chin and folds forward over both ears — the part most face coverings leave out. A hook-and-loop tab at the back of the head pulls it in, so it holds without a strap across your eyes or a loop behind your ear fighting your sunglasses.

Worth being straight about what it is not. It is not a balaclava and it does not cover the top of your head. Your forehead and eyes stay open, so it works under a beanie, a helmet or goggles rather than instead of them.

Limits

It filters nothing. There is no filter in this, no filter pocket, and no rating of any kind — no P2, no N95, no EN 149. It will not keep out dust, silica, smoke, welding fume or pollen, and it is not protection from illness or infection. It is a warmth and wind layer for your face and nothing else. If you need respiratory protection on a job, you need rated gear and this is not it.

It is not a balaclava. It has no crown. The top of your head, your forehead and your eyes are all open, so on a genuinely cold day you still want a beanie or a helmet liner over the top.

We are not calling it windproof. It is a knitted fleece with no membrane and no rating printed anywhere on it. It takes the bite out of a breeze and it stops the wind chill straight onto bare skin, but a hard head-on wind will still work through the weave. Anyone selling you a membrane figure for this has made it up.

No temperature rating. The supplier prints no lower limit, no fabric weight and no insulation figure, so there is no honest number to give you. How cold you can go in it depends on what else you are wearing and how hard you are working.

Not waterproof, and not water resistant either. Fleece wets out. In rain or wet snow it will soak, and a soaked face cover is colder than no face cover. Wring it out and swap it, or run something shed-proof over the top.

Keep it away from sparks. It is polyester with no flame-resistance rating on it. Polyester melts rather than chars, so it does not belong near welding, grinding or an open fire.

The two options are not explained. The listing sells a Summer and a Winter option, and the supplier does not state anywhere what changes between them beyond the name. We are not going to guess at it for you.

One size, with limits. The back tab takes up slack for a smaller face, but there is only so far it lets out. There is no head-circumference range printed on it.

Q & A

Will this stop me breathing in dust on site?

No. It is a fleece face cover with a woven panel over the mouth, not a respirator, and it carries no filtration rating at all. Air goes straight through the weave and around the edges. For dust, silica or fume you need a rated respirator.

Does it cover my whole head like a proper balaclava?

No. It covers from about the bridge of the nose down — cheeks, nose, mouth, chin, jaw and both ears — and stops there. The crown of your head is bare, which is why it works under a beanie or a helmet instead of competing with one.

Will it fit under a helmet?

It is meant to. There is no fabric over the crown to bunch under a shell, and the supplier lists under-helmet use among the intended uses on its own artwork. The ear flaps do sit between your ear and the helmet padding, so a very tight-fitting helmet will feel tighter again.

Will it fog my glasses or goggles?

The mesh panel sits over the nose and mouth and vents breath forwards, which is the design intent and it helps. It is not a cure. Any face cover in cold air pushes some breath upwards, and if your goggles sit hard against the top edge you will get some fog.

How big is it?

What colour do I get?
