Five in the morning at the pre-start, and you have your beanie pulled down as far as it will go. Limits

Here is where it falls short. Read this before you buy — it will save us both a return.

• Not waterproof: the supplier says water resistant and gives no rating. Light rain and dry snow are fine. Sustained rain will get through, and once faux fur wets out it stops insulating until it dries.
• No temperature rating: the supplier does not state one, so we will not put a number on it. How cold it suits depends on wind, how long you are standing still and what else you have on.
• Will not fit under a helmet: it is a bulky hat. Under a hard hat, a bump cap or a ski or motorbike helmet it wrecks the fit of both, and a hard hat that does not sit properly is not doing its job. For warmth under a helmet, wear a thermal fleece balaclava instead — it is built to go under a lid.
• The pile flattens: faux fur compresses where it rubs and where you pack it, and it does not fully spring back. That is normal for the material, not a fault.
• It muffles your hearing: flaps down over both ears cuts what you can hear. On a live site, near plant or beside traffic, that matters. Pick your moment.
• One size, and that is it: there is no size option at the checkout. The supplier states 58–60 cm (580–600 mm). A head well outside that will find it tight or loose, and there is no other size to swap into — apparel sizing sales are final.
• Shell material unstated: the supplier does not name the outer fabric. If you have a sensitivity to a particular synthetic, there is nothing published to check it against.

How cold will it actually handle?
