Anyone who has taken an airsoft BB to the mouth only does it once. Split lip, chipped tooth, game over — and the worst of it isn't the sting, it's the dentist's bill afterwards.

The usual fix is a full-face mask, which brings its own headaches: your goggles fog, your voice goes muffled, and half an hour in you're wearing a sauna. So the mask comes off between games — and that's exactly when people get caught.

This is the other way to do it: a half-face mask of woven steel mesh covering chin, mouth, jaw and nose bridge, with fold-down covers over the ears — strapped over the included cap or worn on its own. Air and sound pass straight through the mesh, there's no lens to fog, and the whole set weighs about 150 g. When the day ends it folds flat or drops around your neck.

• Packs down small: the mask folds flat into a dump pouch or crib bag, or hangs around your neck between games.

Limits

Straight up, here's what this mask is not:

• No certified rating: the supplier's artwork advertises "800 fps" (roughly 244 m/s) impact resistance, but no test standard or certificate came with it, so we don't publish it as a protection rating. No part of this mask is tested or marked to AS/NZS 1337.1 or any impact standard we can name.
• Not eye protection: it stops at the nose bridge and leaves your eyes bare by design. Wear rated eye protection every game, no exceptions.
• Mesh has openings: the supplier doesn't publish the aperture size, and BBs can shatter on steel mesh — fragments small enough to pass through the weave are a known risk with every mesh mask. One more reason the eyes get their own rated cover.
• Not hearing protection: the ear covers are fabric and open mesh with no attenuation rating — they cover your ears, they don't quieten anything. Not a substitute for ear muffs or plugs rated to AS/NZS 1270.
• The cap is a cap: it keeps sun off, holds patches and anchors the mask. It offers no head impact protection and is not a helmet.
• Not work PPE: don't wear it in place of a rated face shield for brushcutting, grinding or any job that calls for AS/NZS 1337 face protection.

Q & A

Will it stop an airsoft BB?

Steel mesh half-masks of this pattern are common kit on airsoft and paintball fields for exactly that job. Ours carries no certified rating though — the supplier quotes a figure with no standard behind it — so treat it as unrated: keep rated eye protection on and follow your field's rules on minimum engagement distance.

Can I wear goggles or glasses with it?

The mask finishes at the nose bridge and leaves the whole eye line clear, so goggles and glasses sit above it rather than under it. The supplier publishes no compatibility list, so if your eyewear rides low on the cheeks, check it against the padded top edge.

Do I have to wear the cap?

No. The mask runs its own twin elastic straps, so it wears fine on its own. The cap adds a brim for the sun, a hook-and-loop panel for patches, and gives the straps something to seat over.

What size is it?

One size. The mask straps are elastic and adjustable, and the cap has a hook-and-loop rear strap. The supplier publishes no head circumference range, so we won't invent one.

Can I still hear with the ear covers down?

Yes — the covers are open mesh over each ear, not sealed cups. Sound passes through, so call-outs and range commands stay audible.
