Tactical LED Headlamp Cap

Light where you look, both hands still free.

You are trying to tie a hook on in the dark with a torch clamped in your teeth, or you have got the bonnet up on the side of a track holding a torch in one hand and a spanner in the other. The torch ends up on the ground pointing at nothing, and you finish the job by feel.

Most of the time the answer is a head torch, and most of the time the head torch is in the other bag. This is the one you are already wearing. Five white LEDs sit in the leading edge of the peak, a slide switch under the brim turns them on, and the light goes wherever your head is pointing.

Be clear about what it is: a convenience light for close work at arm's length, not a replacement for a proper work head-torch. It is the light you have on you when you did not plan on needing one.

What It Does

• Ties a knot in the dark: night fishing, both hands on the trace and the line, and the light pointing exactly at your fingers instead of at the water.
• Under the bonnet at dusk: a blown fuse or a loose terminal on the side of a track — no torch to prop, no second person to hold it.
• In the roof space: tradies crawling through insulation with a drill in one hand. The light follows your head, so it lands on the fitting you are looking at.
• Setting up camp late: pegs, guy ropes and the gas fitting, with both hands available and no torch rolling off the table.
• Walking the dog after tea: enough light to see the footpath and the lead, and you are wearing a cap anyway.

Limits

This is the honest part. Read it before you buy.

• It is not a work head-torch: five coin-cell LEDs are for close work — roughly arm's length to a few paces. If you are walking a track at night or working a real night shift, buy a proper head-torch and keep this as the backup.
• No output figure exists: the supplier states no lumens, no beam distance and no run time. We are not going to make those numbers up, and anyone quoting them on a cap light this size probably has.
• Treat it as not waterproof: no IP rating and no water rating is stated. It is fabric with a battery box wired into it. A bit of drizzle is one thing, a downpour or a dunking is another.
• It points where you point: that is the whole appeal and it is also the catch. Look down and the light goes down. Turn to talk to someone and you light them straight in the face.
• The light does not come out: the LEDs are set into the peak seam and wired to the battery box, so there is no module to unclip. That rules out throwing the cap in the machine.
• Coin cells, not rechargeable: CR2032s are cheap and everywhere, but they are a consumable. Carry a spare pair if you are away from the shops.
• One size only: the rear strap adjusts, and that is the only adjustment there is. There is no fitted sizing on this cap.

Q & A

How bright is it?
The supplier does not state a lumen figure, so we are not going to quote one. What we can tell you is what it is: five white LEDs in the peak, throwing a short, wide pool of light for close work. Plenty for a knot, a fuse or a tent peg. Not enough to light a paddock.

Is it rechargeable, or does it take batteries?
Batteries. Two CR2032 3V lithium coin cells sit in a hinged holder on the battery box under the peak, and they are replaceable. There is no charging port and no USB cable.

How long does a set of batteries last?
Not specified by supplier. Coin cells are small, so plan on it being a short-burst convenience light rather than something you leave running all night, and keep a spare pair with it.

Is it waterproof?
No water rating or IP rating is stated by the supplier, so treat it as not water resistant. Keep it out of heavy rain and never put it in water.

Can I take the light out so I can wash the cap?
No. The LEDs are built into the seam at the front of the peak and hard-wired back to the battery box, so there is no removable module. Whether the cap can be washed at all is not specified by supplier — we would spot-clean it and pull the coin cells out first.

Will it fit me?
One size fits all, adjusted with a hook-and-loop strap at the back. The supplier states no head circumference range, so there is no size chart for this one.

What colours can I get, and can I buy more than one?
