Squinting into the glare ruins a good session.

Low sun coming off the water goes straight in under your sunglasses. By mid-afternoon you have a headache, you have stopped reading the surface properly, and you pack up earlier than you meant to. Sunglasses handle the light coming at you. They do nothing about the light coming over the top of the lens.

That is the job a peak does. This one is 70 mm long and pre-curved, so it sits close to your face and cuts the light above the lens instead of standing out flat and catching every gust on the way back to the ramp.

The camouflage is a look, and we will be straight about that. On open water, on a boat, moving around, a printed leaf pattern is not concealing you from anything. Buy it because you like how it looks, not because you think it makes the fish less wary.

Fifteen colourways, one size — 56 to 60 cm (560 to 600 mm) around the head, taken up by a strap at the back. Seven of the fifteen have a mesh rear panel and the other eight are solid fabric the whole way round. That is worth checking before you order, because the two wear very differently in the heat.

What It Does
  • Kills the overhead glare: a 70 mm pre-curved peak blocks the light that comes in above your sunglasses, which is the light that makes you squint.
  • Shades your face: keeps direct sun off your forehead, eyes and nose through the middle of the day.
  • Adjusts to your head: a rear strap on a slide buckle takes the crown in anywhere across the 560 to 600 mm range.
  • Lets heat out: metal eyelet vents in the crown on every colourway, and a full mesh back panel on seven of them.
  • Holds its shape: a structured six-panel crown that stands up rather than collapsing flat on your head.
  • Gives you a choice of look: fifteen patterns across fish skeleton, fish head, angler fish and lure-and-hook embroidery.
Key Features
  • Cotton construction: the supplier's own specification panel states cotton. The blend percentage is not given.
  • 70 mm peak: pre-curved and top-stitched, with an undervisor in a dark shade to cut reflection back up at your eyes.
  • 110 mm crown: six panels, seamed and reinforced, with a fabric-covered button at the apex.
  • Metal eyelet vents: two per side, punched through the crown panels rather than stitched mesh inserts.
  • Mesh or solid back: c3, c5, c7, c9, c11, c13 and c15 have a mesh rear panel. c1, c2, c4, c6, c8, c10, c12 and c14 are solid fabric.
  • Adjustable rear strap: a fabric strap on a slide buckle, not a plastic snapback and not hook-and-loop.
  • Taped inner seams: the crown seams are covered with binding tape inside so they do not sit against your scalp.
  • Raised embroidery: the fish motif is stitched, not printed, so it does not crack or peel off the panel.
  • One size, unisex: a single 560 to 600 mm fit across all fifteen colourways.

Limits

  • One size only: 560 to 600 mm around the head. There is no small and no large. If you measure outside that range this cap will not fit you, and no amount of strap will fix it.
  • Measure before you order: the supplier states its figures come from manual measurement with a 10 to 30 mm tolerance. Run a tape around your head just above the ears and above the eyebrows.
  • Covers your face, not your neck: a peak shades your eyes and the front of your face. Your ears, neck and the back of your head are out in it. No UPF number is printed on the cap or given by the supplier, so we do not quote one.
  • Cotton and water: this is a cotton cap, not a wet-weather one. It soaks in rain and in spray, and a soaked cap takes a while to dry and gets heavy.
  • Camo is not concealment: on open water it does nothing for you. In a hide or on a bank against timber it breaks your outline a little. Do not buy it as a hunting advantage.
  • No chin cord: there is no retainer strap and no loop for one. At speed in a boat it will go over the side like any other cap.
  • The colourway codes mean nothing: c1 through c15 are the supplier's own codes, not descriptions. Go by the photograph and the colourway table under Specs.
  • Prints are unbranded: the supplier does not name the camouflage patterns and no brand mark appears on the cap. We describe them by what they look like and nothing more.

Q & A

How do I know it will fit?

Take a tape measure around your head, just above your ears and across the middle of your forehead. If you land between 560 and 600 mm you are in range. Most adult men measure around 570 to 590 mm and most adult women around 550 to 570 mm, so a smaller head is the more likely miss.

Which ones have the mesh back?

Seven of the fifteen: c3, c5, c7, c9, c11, c13 and c15. The other eight — c1, c2, c4, c6, c8, c10, c12 and c14 — are solid fabric all the way round. If you are fishing through a hot afternoon, take a mesh one.

Is it sun rated?

No rating is printed on it and the supplier does not state one, so we are not going to put a number on this page. What we can tell you is what it physically does: a 70 mm peak keeps direct sun off your face and out of your eyes.

Will it stay on in a boat?

Sitting still or working the bank, yes — do the rear strap up properly and it stays put. Under way at speed, no. There is no chin cord and nothing to clip one to, so turn it backwards or take it off when you open the throttle.

Is the embroidery the same on every colourway?

No. There are five different motifs across the range — a full fish skeleton, a fish head, an angler fish, a lure with a hook, and the skeleton again in a second colour. The colourway table under Specs says which is which.

Can I wash it?

No care instructions came with it and the label sewn into the sweatband is not legible in the supplier's photographs, so we cannot pass on a wash temperature. Treat it as you would any structured cotton cap: cool hand wash, reshape while damp, air dry, and keep it out of the machine so the crown does not collapse.
