Suction does not work on snakebite, and using one can cost you the time that actually matters.
Australian first aid for snakebite is the Pressure Immobilisation Technique:
1. Call 000 immediately.
2. Keep the person still. Do not let them walk. Movement pumps venom through the lymphatic system.
3. Apply a broad pressure bandage firmly over the bite, then bandage the whole limb from the fingers or toes upward, as firm as a sprain strapping.
4. Splint the limb so it cannot bend.
5. Mark the bite site on the outside of the bandage. Do not wash the bite — venom on the skin helps the hospital identify the snake.
6. Wait for the ambulance. Bring the patient to the transport, not the transport to the patient.
Do not cut the bite. Do not suck it. Do not use a tourniquet. Do not wash it.
Antivenom is the treatment, and it is in a hospital. Nothing you carry in a pack replaces getting there.
What this actually is
A small reusable vacuum pump for insect stings and splinters — bees, wasps, mosquitoes, and the odd bit of grass seed or spine under the skin. Applied straight away it can lift some of the irritant out and take the edge off the sting.
It is lightweight, compact and reusable, and it does not require blades or knives. That is the whole of what it is good for.
Being straight with you
These kits are widely sold as snakebite kits. They should not be. We have left this one listed because it is genuinely handy for stings and splinters, and taken the snakebite claims off it — but if you are heading bush and you want the thing that actually saves a life, buy a broad crepe pressure bandage and learn how to use it. It costs a few dollars and it works.
If anaphylaxis is a risk for you or anyone in your group — swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, collapse after a sting — that is an adrenaline autoinjector and 000, not a suction pump.
