Steel caps get heavy about hour nine.

You pick your boots up and put them down thousands of times a shift. Do that with a lump of steel sitting in each toe and you feel it in your legs and your lower back long before knock-off. Then the same steel goes cold on a frosty start, bakes in the afternoon sun, and corrodes quietly where you cannot see it.

These use a plastic toe cap instead, and that is the point of them. Non-metallic caps are a category people go looking for on purpose. Plastic is lighter than steel. It does not carry heat or cold through to your toes the way a steel cap does. It cannot rust. And there is no steel in the anti-puncture plate either — that is aramid, the material the supplier brands Kevlar and rates at 1100 N.

Underfoot, that aramid plate is what sits between you and a nail through a soft sole. Step off a pallet onto a bent nail in a demo pile and it is a puncture wound, a tetanus shot, an incident report and a fortnight on light duties. The rest of the boot is a suede cow leather upper with camouflage canvas panels, a mesh vent in the side and a moulded rubber outsole.

Read the Limits tab before you choose a size, and before you assume what they are rated for. Nothing on this boot is certified — no impact rating, no puncture test report, no slip rating — and the supplier’s own images contradict each other on the electrical marking. That makes these boots for the ute, the yard, the shed, the farm and general trade work. Where a gate demands certified footwear, wear a certified boot.

  • Room across the toes: the cap is a wide one. The supplier’s own words are widen toe caps, do not grind your feet.
  • Dumps heat out the side: a mesh panel above the midsole vents a hot boot on a summer shift.
  • Walks all day: moulded rubber outsole and a soft foam insole, so you are not stiff-legged by smoko.

Limits

These are not certified safety boots. No certificate, test report or standard marking was sighted for this boot. Nothing on it is marked or published to AS/NZS 2210.3, EN ISO 20345 or ASTM F2413. If your site, mine or client requires certified safety footwear at the gate, this boot does not meet that requirement and should not be relied on where certified boots are required. Those are the exact standards to go and look for on the boot you wear through that gate.

The toe cap is plastic, and it carries no impact rating. The supplier cutaway labels it "Widening the plastic head", and the toe cap in the supplier photograph is white, not metal. Their panel calls it an anti-smashing standard toe cap without naming any standard, and no joule figure is published for it anywhere. Any listing telling you this boot has a steel toe is wrong.

The electrical marking contradicts itself, so treat it as nothing. The boot carries a red tab reading insulation 10KV and one supplier image repeats 10KV — but a second supplier image, on this same product, says insulation 6kv. Two different numbers for the same boot, no test certificate, and no standard named. Do not rely on this boot for any electrical protection. Footwear that genuinely insulates is tested and marked to a standard such as EN 50321-1 or the EH classification in ASTM F2413, and this boot is neither.

Not waterproof, and not sealed. There is an open mesh panel in the side of the upper. Water gets in, and so does dust, grit and anything hot that lands on it. The leather may be anti-scalding but the mesh is not, so keep these away from grinding sparks, hot chips and molten metal.

No slip, oil or antistatic rating. The outsole is rubber with a moulded tread and the supplier publishes no slip resistance, oil resistance, acid resistance or antistatic figure. Assume nothing on a wet steel walkway or a diesel-soaked pad.

The size numbers do not follow one scale. The dropdown offers 7, 7.5, 8.5, 9, 10.5 and 11. Checked against the supplier own conversion chart, 7, 8.5 and 11 appear only in the US column while 7.5, 9 and 10.5 appear only in the UK column — they are not one consistent set of numbers. Buy off foot length in millimetres from the chart in the Specs tab, and allow the supplier stated tolerance of 10 to 20 mm. The largest option works out at roughly EU/CN 45, about 275 mm of foot. If your foot is longer than that, nothing on this listing will fit you.

No metatarsal guard and no ankle armour. The height gives you support and keeps grit and stubble out of the boot. It is not impact protection anywhere above the toe.

We cannot give you a weight or a cap thickness. The supplier publishes neither — there is no weight figure and no millimetre thickness for the toe cap anywhere in its artwork or its listing. Plastic is lighter than steel as a material, and that much is simply true, but we are not going to put a number on this boot that we cannot source. If you need a boot at a stated weight, buy one that states it.

Q & A

Why would I want a plastic toe cap instead of steel?

Weight, temperature and corrosion. Plastic is lighter than steel, so there is less boot to lift all day. It does not conduct temperature, so the cap is not freezing on a winter start or hot after the boot has sat in the sun. And it cannot rust. Plenty of people go looking for a non-metallic cap for exactly those reasons.

How much lighter are they than a steel-capped boot?

We cannot tell you, because the supplier does not publish a weight for this boot and we are not going to invent one. Plastic weighs less than steel for the same amount of material — that is the material, not a measurement of this boot.

Is the toe cap steel?

No, and that is deliberate. The supplier own cutaway diagram labels it a plastic head, and the toe cap in their photograph is white rather than metal. There is no steel in the toe, and no steel in the anti-puncture plate either.

Will they get me through a metal detector?

The two components that are steel in a conventional safety boot are not steel in this one. What we cannot tell you is whether the lace hardware is metal — it is colour-matched to the boot, the supplier says nothing about it, and we are not going to guess from a photograph. So the honest answer is that the toe and the sole plate are clear and the eyelets are unknown.

Can I wear these onto a mine site or a commercial construction job?

No. Those gates want footwear certified to AS/NZS 2210.3, and this boot carries no certification at all. Wear a certified boot where a certified boot is required. These suit the farm, the yard, the shed, the ute and trade work where nobody is checking a certificate at the gate.

What does the 10KV tab on the heel actually mean?

It is a supplier marking, and it is not one to stand on. Another image on this same product says 6kv. The two disagree, there is no test certificate, and no standard is named. Treat the boot as offering no electrical protection.

Which size do I order?

Measure the foot, not the label. Stand with your heel against a wall on a sheet of paper, mark the end of your longest toe, and measure heel to mark in millimetres. Match that to the foot length row in the size chart in the Specs tab. Land between two and take the larger — the supplier states its own measurements vary by 10 to 20 mm.

Will they cope with welding and grinding?

The supplier calls the leather anti-scalding and photographs the boot beside a grinder throwing sparks. The mesh vent in the side is the weak point, and there is no heat or spark rating published for any part of it. For hot work, wear boots rated for hot work.

How long do they take to arrive?
