Your passport lives in a bag. Bags are not kind.

It goes in the top of the daypack with the keys, the charger and a water bottle that is never quite done leaking. A few trips later the corners are curled, the cover is scuffed and there is a crease through the photo page. A worn passport is the sort of thing that gets you a second look at the counter, and replacing one is not a job you do the week before you fly.

This is a plain fold-over cover that the passport slides into. It takes the grit and the knocks instead of the document, and it keeps the boarding pass and a couple of cards in the same hand, so you are not patting down four pockets while the queue moves behind you.

One thing up front, because the name of this thing has misled people for years: it is polyurethane, not animal hide. It is pressed with a grain and it looks the part. It is not leather and we are not going to call it that.

Limits

There is no RFID or NFC blocking in this cover. The supplier names no shielding or foil layer, there is no marking on the product saying there is one, and nothing in the product photography claims it. Plenty of passport covers are sold on that promise. This one is not, and we are not going to imply otherwise. If stopping a contactless read is the reason you are shopping, this is not the one to pick — whatever you end up with should state a shielding layer and show you the marking on the product.

It is not leather. It is polyurethane on a backing. It will not develop a patina, it cannot be fed or conditioned, and once the surface cracks or lifts it does not come back. Treat it as a consumable that protects something expensive, not as an heirloom.

No water rating. The supplier publishes nothing about water resistance, so neither will we. A wet pack or a long soak will get through to the paper inside. Keep it out of the weather like you would the passport on its own.

Nothing is fastened in. With no stud and no strap, anything loose can work its way out if the wallet gets turned over in a bag. The passport is held by the sleeve; the boarding pass and the cards are not.

The internal pocket sizes are not published. We can tell you the outside measures 136 x 95 mm closed, and that passport books issued to the international TD3 standard — Australian and New Zealand passports among them — are 125 x 88 mm. That is a comparison, not a measured clearance, and it is as far as the supplier's information lets us go.

It is a cover, not security. It does not lock, it does not attach to you, and it will not stop a passport being lost or pinched. It stops one being battered.

The cover is 136 x 95 mm closed. Passport books issued to the international TD3 standard, which is what Australia and New Zealand both issue, are 125 x 88 mm — smaller than the cover in both directions. The supplier does not publish the internal sleeve dimensions, so that comparison is the honest answer rather than a measured gap.

Does it block RFID or card skimming?

No. There is no shielding layer stated by the supplier and no marking on the product. Do not buy it for that.

Is it real leather?

No. It is polyurethane with a grain pressed into it. At arm's length it passes for leather. Up close, and over a couple of years of travel, it does not.

How much does it actually hold?

The passport, two cards in the slots on the left panel, and folded notes or a boarding pass in the centre pocket. It is a travel document holder, not a replacement for your everyday wallet.

What is the difference between "brown" and "coffee"?

They are two different browns — one a lighter tan, the other much darker. The supplier does not label which is which in the photos, so if the exact shade matters to you, black is the safe pick.
