You are trying to shift something that is seated tight — a bearing onto a shaft, a machined part into a jig, a seized pin, a stuck flange — and everything in the toolbox is wrong for it. A steel hammer moves the part and leaves a dent in it. A rubber mallet leaves no dent because it leaves no energy either; it just bounces.
A copper hammer is the way out. The head is softer than steel, so when it lands the copper gives instead of the work — the blow goes in dead and solid, the part moves, and the striking face wears the damage instead of the surface you care about. That is the whole trade: the hammer is sacrificial, the job is not.
Five head sizes, sold one at a time — from 227 g (8 oz) for careful taps near finished surfaces up to 1.36 kg (48 oz) when you want the mass of the head doing the work instead of your shoulder. Same drum-shaped head on all of them, with a flat striking face at each end.
What It Does
- Non-marring blows on steel: drives bearings, gibs, shafts, dowels and machined parts home without leaving a mark on them — the copper deforms first, the steel does not.
- Breaks things loose: a dead, solid hit to free a seized joint, a stuck flange or a taper without burring the part the way a steel sledge would.
- Drives without bounce: far more mass than a rubber or nylon mallet of the same size, so the energy goes into the job instead of back up your arm.
- Workshop and field fitting: machine fitters, mechanics, riggers and anyone assembling metal parts that have to come apart again undamaged.

- Copper head: the supplier's bare factory heads show copper through every visible surface, including inside the eye. It states no grade and no purity figure, so this page says copper and leaves it there.
- Two striking faces: a flat face at each end of the drum, so wear is spread across two ends rather than one.
- Anti-slip grip: black chevron-textured soft grip over a yellow shaft, with a lanyard hole through the butt. The shaft material is not stated by the supplier.
- Stated lengths: the supplier's dimension panels show overall lengths of 280 mm, 320 mm and 330 mm across the range, without saying which length belongs to which head weight.
- Size stamped on the head: each head carries a pound designation stamped into the copper. The supplier's photos show a 4P sample — a size larger than any sold on this page.
- No standard marked: nothing on the tool or the packaging artwork cites an Australian, ISO or EN standard, and no test certificate has been sighted.
Limits
Not certified for explosive atmospheres. Copper hammers are widely marketed as non-sparking. A genuine non-sparking tool for hazardous zones is certified beryllium-copper or aluminium-bronze, with the standard stated and a certificate you can sight. This hammer states no alloy and no standard, so it is not certified spark-free kit — do not take it into a hazardous or explosive atmosphere. That work needs certified Be-Cu tools with the paperwork to prove it.
The face mushrooms — deburr it and wear eye protection. Copper is soft enough to spread under repeated blows. The rim of the face work-hardens, mushrooms and can shed slivers of metal. Dress the burr back with a file or grinder before it gets ragged, and wear eye protection every time you strike — you and anyone standing near you.
It still marks softer materials. Non-marring means softer than steel. Against aluminium, brass, timber or a painted surface the copper is the harder party and it can dent them. Put a block of softwood between the face and anything finished.
The weights do not fully reconcile. The supplier sells the middle hammer as 22 oz, but its own stock code calls it 1.5P — and a 1.5 pound hammer is 24 oz. It also never says whether its weight figures are the head alone or the whole tool. The designations are published in Specs exactly as the supplier gives them; none has been checked on our scales.
Head fixing is not stated. The supplier does not say how the head is secured to the shaft, and does not offer spare parts. Check the head is tight before every use; if it moves at all, stop using it.
Not a nail or demolition hammer. The soft faces will deform on nail heads, masonry and star pickets, and the handle is not a pry bar. Q & A
Can I use it in a hazardous or explosive area?
No. It carries no alloy statement and no certification, so it does not qualify as a non-sparking tool, whatever copper hammers get called elsewhere. Zone-rated work needs certified beryllium-copper or aluminium-bronze tools with the certificate to show for it.
Am I buying one hammer or a set?
One. You choose a size and you receive that single hammer at the price shown. There is no set on this page.
Which size should I get?
For general workshop fitting, the 624 g (22 oz) or 907 g (32 oz) hammer is the useful middle. The 227 g (8 oz) hammer suits small, careful work near finished surfaces. The 1.36 kg (48 oz) hammer is for big flanges and seized assemblies where the mass does the work.
Will it damage the part I am hitting?
On steel and cast iron, it is the copper that gives, which is the whole point. On aluminium, brass or timber it can still leave a mark — use a softwood block between the face and anything you cannot afford to bruise.
How heavy is the head, exactly?
We cannot tell you to the gram. The sizes are the supplier's ounce designations — 8, 16, 22, 32 and 48 oz hammer sizes, converting to 227 g, 454 g, 624 g, 907 g and 1.36 kg — but the supplier never states whether those figures are the head alone or the whole tool, and its stock code for the 22 oz hammer reads 1.5P, which would be a 24 oz hammer. Nothing has been weighed on our scales.
