Roll an ankle once and you never quite trust it again

Uneven ground, a loose rock, a step off a tray you misjudged. Once an ankle has gone on you it sits in the back of your mind every time the footing gets ordinary, and you start walking around the bad ground instead of over it.

This is an adjustable elastic compression brace. It wraps firm around the joint, holds position with hook-and-loop straps top and bottom, and leaves the heel open so you keep your range of motion. It is thin enough to live under a sock rather than over the top of one.

Read this bit before you order — it is side-specific. The supplier makes a left-foot brace and a right-foot brace as separate items, and its own photos are labelled that way. You pick the side at checkout, and you get one brace, not a pair. Ordering the wrong side is the easiest mistake to make on this page, so check it before you hit buy.

What It Does

Limits

This is a support brace, not a treatment. It adds compression and holds the joint steady. It will not heal a sprain, cure tendinitis, or treat arthritis.

If you have rolled an ankle badly, or one that keeps giving way, get it looked at properly. A brace over an untreated ligament injury just lets you keep loading it.

We are a gear shop, not a clinic. We cannot advise you on whether this brace suits your ankle — that is a question for a doctor or a physio, and we would rather say so than guess.

The rest of the honest list, so nothing lands as a surprise:

• One brace, not a pair: the supplier packs a single piece. If you want both ankles done you need to buy two, and you need to buy one of each side.
• Wrong side will not do: the left and right braces are mirrored, so the strap and the moulded panel land in the wrong place if you order the wrong one. It is not a brace you can flip over.
• No colour choice: it is black. The supplier gallery shows grey-trim and red-trim versions, but there is no colour option at checkout, so we cannot promise which trim turns up.
• Not a rigid brace: this is elastic. It limits how far the joint rolls, it does not lock it. If you have been told to immobilise an ankle, this is the wrong item.
• Sizing is by shoe size: the supplier publishes no ankle or calf measurements at all, only a shoe-size chart, and its bands overlap at 45. See the Q & A before you choose.

Q & A

Is it left-foot or right-foot specific, or does one fit either?

It is side-specific. The supplier makes them as a mirrored pair of separate items and labels its own photos "Left foot" and "Right foot", and the option you choose at checkout is the side. Pick the ankle you actually want it on. One brace will not do both feet.

How do I pick a size?

The only sizing the supplier publishes is against shoe size — no ankle circumference, no calf measurement. Their chart reads: S 35 to 38, M 39 to 41, L 42 to 45, XL 45 to 48. Two things to know before you use it. The supplier does not state which scale those numbers are on, though the range matches European sizing rather than AU or NZ. And its own bands overlap at 45, so if you land on 45 exactly, size up — it is an elastic wrap with adjustable straps, and a slightly larger one can be pulled in.

Do I get one brace or a pair?

One. The supplier's information sheet says "package: 1 piece" and that is what ships. Two ankles means two orders, one left and one right.

What colour will I get?

Black. The supplier's photos show it with grey trim and with red trim, but there is no colour selector at checkout, so we cannot guarantee which of the two arrives. If the trim colour matters to you, this is not the product for you.

Will it fit inside a work boot, and can I wear it all shift?

It is a thin elastic wrap rather than a padded brace, so it is designed to sit under a sock and inside footwear. We cannot promise it in a specific boot — a lace-up safety boot that is already snug will be a squeeze, and the supplier publishes no thickness figure. As for how long to wear it, that depends on you and your ankle, and it is not something we are able to advise on.

How do I wash it?

No care instructions come with it — the supplier publishes none, so we are not going to invent a wash temperature. Treat it like any elastic strapping: hand wash in cool water, air dry out of direct sun rather than on a heater, and close the hook-and-loop straps before it goes anywhere near other gear or they will grab everything in the tub.

How long is delivery, and what does it cost?
