Marine Buoyancy Vest with Whistle & Reflector Strips

Not everything called a life jacket is one.

This one is not, and we have retitled it rather than let the old name stand. It is a buoyancy vest — a foam flotation aid that helps a conscious person stay up in the water. That is a genuinely useful thing to have in the tinny, on the kayak or behind the ski boat. It is not the same thing as a certified lifejacket, and the difference matters enough that we have put it in the Limits tab rather than the fine print.

Sleeveless and open at the arms so you can still paddle, cast and work the boat. Three adjustable quick-release buckles down the front and crotch straps underneath, so it stays on your torso instead of riding up over your head. A whistle on a lanyard for being found, plus two strips down the back that the supplier describes as reflectors.

What It Does

Thickened EPE foam panels in a 240D polyester Oxford shell add buoyancy while you are in the water and conscious. The whistle carries further than a shout over an outboard. Adult sizes L to XXXL, in red, orange, blue or fluorescent yellow.

Key Features

• Stays put: three adjustable quick-release buckles plus crotch straps, so it will not ride up over your head when you hit the water.
• Whistle on a lanyard: attached, so it is still with you if you go over. A whistle cuts through engine noise and wind in a way a voice does not.
• Two strips down the back: the supplier calls them reflectors. In the photographs they are plain fabric strips in the shell colour, not silver retro-reflective tape, so do not count on them being picked up by a spotlight after dark.
• Open-arm cut: sleeveless, so you keep full movement for paddling, casting and reeling.
• 240D polyester Oxford shell: the supplier's stated fabric, over thickened EPE foam.
• High-visibility colours: red, orange, blue or fluorescent yellow — pick the one that stands out against the water you are on.

Limits

Read this first, because it is the whole point of the retitle.

• No AS 4758 approval is published: the supplier provides no Australian Standard approval, no ISO 12402 marking and no certificate. Do not count this as the approved PFD your state requires you to carry. Check your own state's marine rules and carry an approved jacket as well.
• It will not turn you face-up: there is no collar and no head support. A certified Level 100 lifejacket is designed to roll an unconscious wearer face-up. This is a vest cut and it cannot do that. If you are knocked out, it will not save you.
• No buoyancy rating is published: not specified by supplier. No newton figure, and no maximum wearer weight for buoyancy. The weights in the size chart in the Specs tab are for picking a fit, not a load rating. We are not going to estimate one for a flotation device.
• Adult sizes only: L to XXXL. The supplier's own size chart runs down to XS, and the smaller sizes on it are children's measurements — XS is 110 to 130 cm and 15 to 30 kg, S is 130 to 140 cm and 20 to 40 kg, M is 140 to 155 cm and 40 to 60 kg. Those sizes are not sold here. An adult buoyancy vest must not be used on a child — they slip straight out of it.
• It is a coastal and inland aid, not offshore kit: for the tinny, the kayak, the river and the bay with a conscious wearer. Not for offshore passage-making, where an approved lifejacket is the only sensible answer.
• The strips are not confirmed as reflective: the supplier calls them reflector strips, but in the photographs they are plain fabric in the shell colour rather than silver retro-reflective tape, and no certificate or test figure has been sighted. Carry a torch or a light if being seen after dark matters.
• Foam does not last forever: check it each season. Compressed, torn or waterlogged foam loses buoyancy, and no rating means you cannot tell how much is left.

Q & A

Can I use this as the lifejacket I am legally required to carry?
No. Every state requires an approved standard, and no approval is published for this vest. Carry an approved one and treat this as an extra layer for people who are already wearing something, or for activities where carriage rules do not apply.

Why did you change the name?
Because it was called a life jacket and it is not one. It has no collar, no certification and no buoyancy rating. Selling it under that name would tell you it does something it cannot do.

Is it any good then?
Yes, for what it is. A conscious adult in the water with this on floats better than without it, is easier to see and can signal. That is worth having on a tinny or a kayak. It is just not a substitute for a certified jacket.

The supplier publishes a height and a weight range against each size, and the four sizes we sell are charted in the Specs tab. Go by height first, then weight. Size up if you are between, and pull the buckles in.

Is there a size for kids?
No. This is sold in adult sizes only, L to XXXL. The supplier's chart runs down to XS, and those smaller sizes are children's measurements — they are not stocked here. A child needs a flotation device that is certified and sized for them, not an adult vest. An adult vest on a child is worse than nothing, because they slip straight out of it.
