Know what you're buying before you run it up.

Most flags get sold without anyone telling you what they actually are. One turns up, and it's either too small for the pole you already own or too big for the wall you had in mind. Then it goes up permanently, and by the end of a hot summer it's faded and the fly end is in ribbons, and you're left wondering whether you bought a dud.

This is a printed polyester Australian National Flag in two sizes — 900 × 1500 mm and 600 × 900 mm. The hoist edge carries a sewn white header band with metal eyelets, so it hangs off clips, a shackle or a length of cord. It is not a heavyweight sewn-and-appliquéd ceremonial flag, and we're not going to sell it as one.

Flown now and then — a long weekend, a regatta, a shed wall, the back of the caravan — it will see you through a good many years. Flown continuously in Australian sun and wind, it is a consumable. The honest version of that is under Limits, and it is worth reading before you choose a size.

What It Does

• On the shed or farm gate: the 600 × 900 mm pins flat to a wall, a shed end or a verandah beam — no pole, no ladder, no hardware to buy.
• On a caravan or camper: small enough to run off the awning pole or an aerial at camp, and to come down and fold away before you hitch up and move on.
• On a boat: the eyelets take a light shackle or a length of cord, so the 600 × 900 mm goes onto a transom staff without any modification.
• On a domestic flagpole: 900 × 1500 mm is the size most home and club poles are set up for, and it reads clearly from the road.
• A long way from home: it folds into a bag or a camp box, which is the whole argument for a printed flag over a sewn one if you're working or living overseas.

Limits

Flown continuously, a printed polyester flag is a consumable. Full Australian sun fades the colour and constant wind chews the fly end into a fringe. That is what happens to every printed flag left up permanently — it is not a fault, and no amount of copy can talk you out of it. A flag that goes up for a weekend and comes down again will last you years. One left up 365 days a year will not.

No life span is stated, and we are not going to invent one. The supplier gives no fabric weight in GSM, no UV rating and no expected service life. Anyone quoting you a figure for a flag at this price is guessing. If you intend to fly one permanently, plan on replacing it, and keep the spare in the cupboard.

The design is printed, not sewn. The colour carries through the fabric, so the reverse reads as a mirror image — the Union Flag sits in the top right when you look at the back. That is normal for a printed flag and it is fine on a pole, where the flag turns with the wind and is read from the front. If you want a flag that reads correctly from both sides, you want a double-sided or a sewn flag, and this is not it.

Neither size is the official 1:2 proportion. The Australian National Flag is defined at twice as long as it is high — 900 × 1800 mm, and so on. This one is 900 × 1500 mm (3:5) or 600 × 900 mm (2:3), which is what almost every imported printed flag is made to. For a shed wall, a caravan or a domestic pole nobody will ever notice. For anything official, ceremonial or protocol-bound, buy a 1:2 flag from a flag specialist — we would rather tell you now than take the order.

It arrives folded. Expect creases out of the pack. They drop out after a day or two of flying, or under a cool iron on the reverse if you want it flat on a wall straight away.

Nothing else is in the box. No pole, no bracket, no clips, no cord and no shackles. The eyelets are the fixing point and everything that goes through them is on you.

Look after it and take it down. Australian flag protocol asks that a flag is not flown once it is damaged, faded or worn out — which is the same advice as the practical one. Bring it in when the weather turns, bring it in when you're not using it, and it stays presentable a great deal longer.

What sizes can I get?
Two — 900 × 1500 mm and 600 × 900 mm. The larger one suits a standard domestic or club flagpole. The smaller one suits a wall, a caravan awning pole, a boat staff or a window. Pick the size on the product page before you add it to the cart.

Is the design printed on both sides?
No. It is a single-sided print and the colour shows through to the back, where the design reads as a mirror image. On a pole that is a non-issue. On a wall, hang the printed face out.

How does it attach to a pole?
Through the metal eyelets in the white header band on the hoist edge. Flag clips, a light shackle or a length of cord all work. There is no rope-and-toggle and no pole sleeve supplied with it.

Can I leave it flying all year?
You can, but it will not stay looking new. Sun fades printed polyester and wind frays the fly end. If it is going up permanently, treat it as something you replace rather than something you keep, and take it down when a big blow is forecast.

Does it come with a pole or clips?
No. The flag only. No pole, bracket, clips, cord or shackles are included.

How do I wash it?
The supplier states no care instructions. Treat it as a printed polyester item — a cold hand wash and drip dry is the low-risk approach, and keep it away from a hot dryer.

How long will it take to arrive?
