Multi-Pocket Hi-Vis Safety Vest with Reflective Tape

Dusk on the highway, a blown tyre, and you are crouched down behind the ute with the jack in the dirt. Road trains are coming through at a hundred and you sit below the line of their headlights until you are close. Close is too late.

That is where the chain starts. A driver does not pick you up, they do not move over, and a slow hour on the verge turns into an ambulance, a closed road and an investigation. Same story backing a boat trailer down an unlit ramp, or walking around a breakdown on a station track at night.

This is a knitted polyester vest with silver-grey retroreflective tape across the chest, across the back and over both shoulders, and enough pockets on the front that you are not walking back to the ute for your phone, your site card or a pen. It zips up the front and goes over a shirt or a jacket.

One thing to be straight about first: nothing on this vest is marked to an Australian standard. The Limits section below sets out exactly what that means, so you can decide whether it matters for what you are doing.

What It Does

• Roadside at night: the tape throws headlights straight back at the driver, so what is coming at you sees a person on the shoulder instead of a dark shape near a parked vehicle.
• Unlit yards and boat ramps: the bloke on the ground directing a reverse is the one who needs to be visible, and he is usually the one wearing nothing.
• Telling your crew apart: eight colours, so a work party is not one indistinguishable wall of yellow and you can pick your own people out at fifty paces.
• Carrying the small stuff: phone, site card, pens, tape and a UHF handpiece on the shoulder tab, so a ten minute job does not need a tool belt.
• Over what you already wear: sleeveless and unlined, so it goes over a jumper in July and a shirt in January without cooking you.

Key Features

• Knitted polyester: the supplier states 100% polyester knitted fabric with grey binding around the edges, armholes and neck.
• Retroreflective tape: silver-grey tape roughly 50 mm wide, converted from the supplier's own figure. Two bands around the body and a vertical run over each shoulder, front and back.
• Full-length zip: moulded plastic teeth on a grey tape, so it opens all the way and is not a pull-over.
• ID window pocket: chest pocket with a clear window and a hook-and-loop flap, sized to show a site card without taking it out.
• Utility chest pocket: a second chest pocket on the other side. On some colours this is a four-slot pen panel and on others a plain patch pocket – see Limits.
• Two cargo pockets: bellows sides so they expand, hook-and-loop flaps over the top to hold the contents in when you bend.
• Shoulder mic tabs: a hook-and-loop tab on each shoulder for a UHF handpiece or a radio lead.
• Eight colours: fluorescent yellow, yellow and blue, lime green, orange, golden, red, blue and black.
• Five sizes: M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL, sized off a chest figure. The supplier's chart is in the Specs tab.
• Worn over the top: sleeveless, unlined and open at the sides, so it is a layer on top of your clothes rather than a shirt.

Limits

• No Australian standard is marked: nothing on the garment, and nothing in any of the supplier's own images, shows AS/NZS 4602.1 (the hi-vis garment standard) or AS/NZS 1906.4 (the retroreflective material standard). No class is stated either – not Class D for day use, not Class N for night, not Class D/N. No certificate has been sighted. Treat this as a general-purpose vest, not certified site PPE.
• No CE or European mark either: there is no CE mark and no EN ISO 20471 marking anywhere in the images. Worth knowing in general: CE is a European mark and on its own it does not satisfy an Australian workplace requirement.
• What to look for on any vest: the standard number and the class are printed on the garment's own label – you want AS/NZS 4602.1 and a class of D, N or D/N. Check ours, check anybody's. If it is not on the label, the garment is not rated, whatever the listing says about it.
• Black, blue and red do nothing by day: they carry the same silver-grey tape, so they light up under headlights or a torch. The fabric is not fluorescent, so in daylight, dull weather or shade with no light source on you they add nothing at all. If daytime visibility is the point, take fluorescent yellow, yellow and blue, orange or green.
• Tape needs a light pointed at it: retroreflective tape sends light back towards wherever it came from. No headlights, no torch, no effect. In flat daylight only the fluorescent fabric is doing any work.
• Being seen is all it does: it is not flame resistant, not arc rated, not cut resistant and not chemical resistant. The supplier states nothing about any of that, so neither will we.
• Not a wet weather layer: knitted polyester with a plastic zip and open sides. It is not waterproof and it will not keep rain off you.
• Sizing is a tight cut: the chart in the Specs tab is the supplier's own, taken flat, with a stated measuring tolerance of 10 to 30 mm. The 3XL option in the buy box is labelled 138 cm chest while the supplier's chart says 136 cm – work to the smaller figure.
• The chest panel varies by colour: black, blue and yellow-blue are photographed with four pen slots on one chest panel; the fluorescent yellow, green, orange, golden and red photos show a plain patch pocket in the same spot. We cannot confirm which build ships against which colour.
• Several figures are simply missing: no garment weight, no fabric weight in gsm, no tape brand, no reflectivity figure and no care instructions. Those rows in the spec table read "Not specified by supplier" and that is deliberate – we would rather leave them blank than make them up.

Q & A

Will this get me through a gate check or a site induction?

Assume not. There is no AS/NZS number and no class printed on it, and the label is the first thing a safety officer looks at. If your site specifies hi-vis to AS/NZS 4602.1 in a stated class, this vest does not show that it meets it. Where no standard is specified – your own property, a roadside tyre change, a boat ramp, a farm, a night walk with the dog – it does the visibility job perfectly well.

What is the real difference between the black one and the fluorescent yellow one?

Daylight. Both carry the same silver-grey retroreflective tape, so both light up under headlights at night. Only the fluorescent colours do anything in daylight. The black one hides grease and does not look like a safety vest, which is exactly why some people want it, but in the middle of the day it is a dark vest with some tape on it.

Will it fit over a jacket?

It is sleeveless, unlined and open at the sides, so it is designed to. The supplier's chart lists a full chest figure but does not say whether that is a body measurement or the finished garment, so if you plan to wear it over a winter jacket most of the time, take the next size up.

How wide is the reflective tape?

Roughly 50 mm, converted from the supplier's own stated figure. Two bands run around the body and one vertical strip runs over each shoulder, front and back. No tape brand and no reflectivity figure is given.

How do I wash it?

Not specified by supplier. No care label detail and no wash instructions come with the listing, so there is nothing honest to quote. Reflective tape and hot machine washing are not natural friends, so treat it gently until you know how it holds up.
