You have got the handset clipped to your chest, a machine running, and both hands full. The call comes through and you hear half of it. Miss a call on the two-way and it runs from minor to catastrophic: a machine moved when it should have held, damage, injury, public liability. Communication is everything. You cannot afford to fail on that, and you certainly cannot afford to be fumbling for a handset to answer.

This is a single-ear tactical headset on a light harness. One ear cup, a flexible gooseneck boom microphone that sits at the corner of your mouth, and an elastic and webbing head harness instead of a rigid headband. The cable runs down your back and terminates in a multi-pole plug with a knurled metal screw collar, so the connection does not shake loose in a bouncing cab.

The single-ear design is deliberate. One ear is on the radio and the other ear is on the world — the reversing beeper, the bloke shouting, the machine that just changed note. Two closed cups sound great until you need to hear something that is not coming through the radio.

Limits

Two of these matter a lot, so they are first.

• This is not hearing protection: it is a communications headset. One ear is open by design, no noise reduction figure is published by the supplier and no hearing protection marking appears anywhere on it. If your job needs hearing protection, wear rated ear muffs or plugs. This does not replace them and it never will.
• Check the plug against your radio: the headset cable ends in a screw-collar plug, not a radio plug. The supplier does not state which radio fitting it is wired for, or whether a press-to-talk adapter is supplied with it. The handheld radio and the press-to-talk unit shown in one of the photographs are there to show how the setup works, not to show what is in the parcel.
• Nothing electrical is published: no impedance, no microphone sensitivity, no cable length, no weight. The supplier states none of it, so neither do we.
• Which ear it covers is unstated: the supplier photographs show the cup on one side only, and no note is given on whether the harness can be reversed.
• Not waterproof: no water or dust rating is published. Treat it as a headset that will handle sweat and a shower, not one you can hose out.
• No approval to trade on: the styling is tactical and that is all it is. There is no military, police or emergency-service approval behind this headset and we are not going to imply one.
• It will not fix a bad radio: if your two-way is out of range or the repeater is the problem, a better earpiece changes nothing.

Q & A

Will it plug straight into my two-way?

Not usually, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The headset cable ends in a screw-collar plug that mates with a press-to-talk adapter, and the adapter is what carries the fitting for your particular radio brand. The supplier does not state which fitting is supplied here, so check the socket on your handset against the photographs before you buy.

Does it protect my hearing?

No. It is a comms headset with a single cup and an open ear, and no noise reduction figure is published for it. On a noisy site you still need rated hearing protection, worn as well as this, not instead of it.

Can I wear it under a helmet?

The harness is thin elastic and webbing rather than a rigid band, which is what makes that practical with a high cut shell. The supplier does not publish a helmet fitment, so treat it as likely rather than guaranteed with a full-cut helmet.

How does the mic pick up in a noisy cab?

The gooseneck holds the capsule at the corner of your mouth, close in, which is the main thing that helps. No noise-cancelling specification is published for the microphone, so we are not claiming one.

Is the boom adjustable?

Yes. It is a flexible metal gooseneck — bend it where you want it and it stays there. The head harness adjusts through the elastic brow band and the rear strap.
