S-5XL Warm Winter Dog Coat Jacket With Harness

The coat goes on. Then you fight the harness on over it.

Winter morning, dark, and the dog is shivering by the door. So you put the coat on, and then you have to get the harness on over the top of it — buckles buried under padding, straps that will not sit where they sat yesterday, and a dog spinning while you do it. Half the time the harness ends up under the coat instead, which means undressing the dog every time you want to clip the lead on.

This one has the harness built into the coat. A padded, fleece-lined shell with a webbing harness sewn onto the outside of it, a metal D-ring on the back for the lead, and a side zip so the whole thing goes on as one piece. Coat on, clip the lead, out the door.

It suits a short-coated or older dog that genuinely feels the cold, and it suits anybody who walks before sunrise or after dark — the harness webbing is reflective, so headlights find the dog before the driver does. It is a warm coat with a lead point on it. It is not safety equipment, and the Limits tab says exactly where that line sits.

What It Does

• Keeps the warmth in: a polar fleece lining against the dog, with 160 g of cotton wadding quilted between the fleece and the outer shell. That is the supplier's own fill figure, and it is the reason this reads as a winter coat rather than a rain shell.
• Sheds a shower: the outer fabric beads water in the supplier's own close-up photographs. Enough for a wet walk. Not a rated waterproof, and the Limits tab explains why we will not call it one.
• Puts the lead on the coat: the harness is part of the garment, so there is no second piece of gear to fit over padding and no undressing the dog to clip a lead on.
• Goes on as one piece: a full-length side zip with a lockable slider, so you are not posting a cold dog's head through a hole.
• Shows up after dark: reflective strips woven the length of the harness webbing, on the back, the chest and the belly strap.
• Adjusts to the dog: drawcords at the neck and around the belly, plus sliding adjusters on the harness straps, so one size covers a range of body shapes rather than one exact dog.

Limits

There is a harness on this coat, so the honest part matters more than usual.

• It is NOT a car restraint: it has not been crash tested, no crash rating is claimed for it, and no standard is printed on it. It will not hold your dog in a collision. Do not clip it to a seatbelt. If you want a car restraint, buy something that is sold and certified as one.
• No load rating on the harness: the supplier publishes no breaking strain and no working load for the webbing, the stitching, the buckle or the D-ring. The marketing panel says the clasp is "high strength" and gives no number behind it. If your dog pulls hard, or lunges at things, do not assume this will hold — use a harness that publishes a rating, and treat the D-ring here as a convenience for a dog that already walks nicely.
• We will not call it waterproof: the supplier does, and the fabric clearly beads water, but there is no hydrostatic head figure, no rating and nothing said about taped or sealed seams. Call it water resistant. It will handle a shower and a wet footpath; sustained rain will get through eventually, and the zip and the seams are where it will happen first.
• No temperature rating: nobody publishes one, so we are not printing a number. It is a lined and wadded winter coat, and how warm that is depends on your dog, its own coat and where you live.
• Two supplier charts disagree: the gallery holds a second sizing panel with back lengths about 20 mm longer, and it only runs to 4XL. That panel belongs to a narrower version of this coat and does not match what is sold here. We have published the chart that matches the eight sizes on this listing, and it is backed by a second panel that uses the same size names. Even so, the supplier states a manual-measurement tolerance of 1 to 3 cm (10 to 30 mm) on its own figures, so treat every number as approximate.
• Size on the tape, not the breed: there is no dog weight range published anywhere, only girth and length. A 20 kg greyhound and a 20 kg staffy are nowhere near the same coat. Measure the animal.
• The back length excludes the collar: the supplier's measuring diagram takes back length from the base of the neck to the tail, not from the collar. Measure your dog the same way or you will end up a size out.
• It does not cover the belly: this is a coat over the back, chest and flanks with an open underside. A dog that gets wet from below on long grass will still get wet from below.
• No washing instructions: the supplier states none. There is a wadded fill and a plastic buckle in it, so a hot machine wash and a tumble dryer are a gamble we would not take.
• The camouflage is a pattern: the camo colourway and the star patch are cosmetic. Nothing here is issued, approved or supplied to any military or service organisation, and we make no such claim.

Q & A

How do I work out the size?

Three measurements, with a soft tape, on the dog. Chest girth right behind the front legs, at the deepest point. Neck girth where a collar sits. Back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Then read the chart in the Specs tab. If only one of the three can match, match the chest — that is the measurement that decides whether the coat does up at all.

My dog falls between two sizes. Up or down?

Up. There is a fleece lining and a wadded fill in this, so it eats room, and the drawcords at the neck and belly can pull a slightly large coat in. They cannot let a small one out. A deep-chested dog — greyhound, whippet, staffy, boxer — should size on the chest number and expect the back length to run short.

Can I walk the dog on the harness that is built in?

On a dog that already walks nicely on a lead, yes — that is what the D-ring is there for. On a dog that pulls, leans or lunges, no. There is no breaking strain published for any part of this harness, so there is no number we can point at to tell you it will hold. A puller wants a harness that publishes a rating, and this is not one.

Will it keep my dog dry in real rain?

It will keep a dog dry through a shower and a wet walk. It will not hold out sustained rain. The supplier calls the fabric waterproof and it does bead water, but no rating is published and nothing is said about sealed seams, so we are calling it water resistant and leaving it there.

Can I use it to secure the dog in the car?

No. It has not been crash tested, no crash rating exists for it, and no standard is printed on it. It will not hold your dog in a collision. It is a warm coat with a lead point on it.

How warm is it, really?

Warmer than a rain shell and less than a kennel coat. Polar fleece against the dog and 160 g of cotton wadding through the body. No temperature rating is published and we are not going to invent one. If your dog shakes on a still 5 °C morning, this is the right sort of coat. If you are in genuine alpine cold, look at something rated for it.
