You can hear the nails coming down the hallway.

Long nails change the way a dog stands. The toes splay, the foot skids on tiles and floorboards, and the dog starts bracing instead of walking. Then one nail catches on a mat or the edge of a tailgate, tears back, and you are dealing with a bleeding paw at ten at night.

Most people put it off because the last go went badly. Blunt clippers crush the nail rather than cut it, the dog feels the pinch, and after that it is a wrestle every single time.

This is a side-cut clipper. The nail sits in a semi-circular notch cut into a thick stainless jaw and a second blade closes across it, so you can see the nail while it is in the notch. A guard bar swings across to limit how far the nail feeds in, and folds back flat when you want the full opening. Three frame sizes, so you are not using a tool built for a Labrador on a kitten.

What It Does

• Cuts rather than crushes: the nail is sheared across by a blade closing into a notch, instead of being squashed between two flat jaws.
• Caps how much comes off: the swing-across guard bar stops the nail feeding too far into the notch, which limits the depth of a single cut.
• Folds the guard away: the bar swings back flat against the head when you want the notch fully open.
• Reopens on its own: a coil spring sits between the handles and springs the jaws back, so you are not prising them apart one-handed while holding a paw.
• Three frame sizes: S, M and L — S is the smallest tool, L the largest. Read the Limits tab before you pick one, because the size wording printed on the cards contradicts itself.

Limits

The guard does not find the quick.

The quick is the blood vessel and nerve running inside the nail. Cut into it and the nail bleeds and it hurts the animal. The guard bar limits how far the nail can feed into the notch, so it limits how much comes off in one cut — but it has no idea where the quick sits on the animal in front of you, and it never will. On dark nails the quick is not visible from the outside at all. That part of the job is on you, and no clipper on the market changes it.

What it is not.

It is a hand tool. There is no sensor, no light and no bloodline detector — the supplier makes no such claim and neither do we. It is not a grinder, so it will not round off or smooth the cut edge. No nail file is included: no file appears on any pack or in any supplier image.

What we cannot tell you.

The supplier publishes no blade opening, no overall length and no weight for any of the three sizes, so we cannot tell you the thickest nail each one will take. The steel grade is not stated. No certification, standard or test mark of any kind is printed on the tool, the card or the listing, and none was sighted. Those rows read "Not specified by supplier" in the table because that is the honest answer, not because nobody looked.

The size printing contradicts itself.

The card in the S pack is printed "For MEDIUM Pets". The card in the M pack is printed "For SMALL Pets". The L pack is printed "For LARGE Pets". That holds across all three colourways in the supplier photographs, while the tools themselves run S smallest through to L largest. So the letters are a reliable guide to the size of the tool; the pet-size wording printed on the S and M cards is transposed and cannot be relied on. We would rather say that plainly than quietly pick one and hope.

Wear and returns.

Blades dull with use, and a dull blade on a thick nail is the thing that crushes rather than cuts. Nothing here is resharpenable at home. Returns are for faulty or not-as-described only — there is no change-of-mind return and no guarantee of any kind on this item.

Q & A

Which size do I need?

Go by the letter, not by the wording printed on the card. S is the smallest tool and L is the largest. We cannot give you a nail thickness or a blade opening in millimetres for any of them, because the supplier does not publish one for this model and it is not in the manufacturer catalogue either.

Will the guard stop me hitting the quick?

No. It limits how deep a single cut goes. It does not know where the quick is on your animal and it cannot warn you.

My dog has black nails. Does that change anything?

Yes. On dark nails the quick cannot be seen from the outside. The tool does nothing to help with that.

What steel is the blade?

Stainless steel. The jaw is engraved STAINLESS STEEL and nothing further. No grade is stated on the tool, the packaging or the supplier listing, so we are not publishing one.

Is a nail file in the box?

No. One clipper on a hanging card, and that is the lot.
