Every walk you end up as the pack mule. The dog's water, a collapsible bowl, treats, waste bags, a spare lead, and your own phone and keys all go into your pack, and an hour up the trail your shoulders know about it. Meanwhile a fit dog trots along carrying nothing at all.

How To Size It

A harness that does not fit is a harness that comes back, or worse, a dog that backs out of it on a road. Three minutes with a soft tape settles it. Measure the dog. Do not size by breed — two dogs of the same breed can be two sizes apart.

• Chest girth is the one that counts: run the tape right around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Snug, not pulled tight. This is the measurement to size on.
• Back length is the second check: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. The back panel should not run past the tail or crowd the shoulders.
• Neck last: measure where a collar naturally sits. The neck strap adjusts, so treat this one as a sanity check rather than the deciding number.
• The ranges overlap a lot: a 50 cm (500 mm) chest sits inside S, M and L all at once. Where you overlap, go by back length, and if you are still between sizes, take the larger one.
• Deep-chested dogs: greyhounds, whippets, dobermans, boxers, ridgebacks and many shepherds carry a big chest girth on a short back. Size on the chest and accept that the back panel will sit shorter than the photographs suggest.
• Heavy-coated dogs: measure through the coat, not under it, or the harness will arrive tighter than the tape said.

Limits

The back handle is not a lifting handle. It is there to steady, hold and guide a dog standing next to you. Nobody publishes a load rating, a breaking strain or a pull strength for this harness — not the supplier, and not any of the other sellers carrying the same unit. We are not going to invent one. Do not use it to hoist a dog off the ground, lower a dog down a drop, winch a dog out of water, or take a dog's full weight in any way.

It is not a vehicle restraint. There is no crash testing behind it and no restraint standard sighted. Do not clip it to a seatbelt or an anchor point and treat it as a car restraint. If you want the dog restrained in a vehicle, buy something sold and tested for that job.

No certification of any kind was sighted. No standard is printed on the product, on the labelling or on the supplier's panels. Assume none.

The fabric is not stated. The supplier publishes no fibre content and no denier figure anywhere on the artwork, and other sellers of the same harness contradict each other on both. We would rather leave the row blank than repeat a number we cannot stand behind, so the specification table says so plainly.

It will not stop a dog pulling. The lead ring sits on the back, which gives a determined puller leverage rather than taking it away. This is a load-carrying and walking harness. If pulling is the problem you are solving, a front-clip design is the tool for that.

It is not water resistant in any stated sense. No rating is published. Treat the pouches as shower-proof at best and put anything that must stay dry in a bag inside them.

There is no carrying capacity figure. How much weight a dog should carry depends on the dog, its age, its condition and the ground, and that is a conversation with your vet rather than a number we can put on a page.

The styling is a look, not a claim. The camo pattern, the webbing and the patch panels are how this category of gear is made. It is not military or police issue and carries no service affiliation.

Q & A

Do the pouches come with it, or are they sold separately?

They come fitted. Every colourway photograph from the supplier shows the harness with the pouches mounted on it, and the listing is sold on that basis. What the supplier does not state anywhere in writing is the exact number of pouches, so the specification table marks the count as not specified rather than putting a figure on it. What is consistently visible is a large flank pouch and a smaller zipped utility pouch. Anything shown loose in the supplier's collage — leads, water bottles, patches, bowls — is styling, not contents.

How do I pick a size?

Measure the chest girth just behind the front legs and match it to the size chart in the Specs tab, then check back length as a second opinion. Do not size by breed. The chest ranges overlap heavily between sizes, so where two sizes both fit on paper, let back length break the tie, and go up rather than down if you are still stuck.

Can I lift my dog with the handle?

No. Treat it as a steadying handle only. No load rating or breaking strain is published for this harness by anyone, so there is no figure to lift against. If you need to lift or lower a dog — over a fence, out of a boat, off a ledge — use equipment sold and tested for that.

Can I use it as a car restraint?

No. It has not been crash tested and no restraint standard has been sighted. Use a purpose-built vehicle restraint or a crate for that job.

What is it actually made of?

The supplier does not say. There is no fibre content and no denier figure printed on any of the supplier's panels or labelling, and sellers of the same harness elsewhere disagree with each other on both counts. What can be seen in the photographs is a woven synthetic pack cloth with webbing straps, plastic side-release buckles, hook-and-loop panels and mesh sections. The specification table records the material as not specified rather than guessing at it.

My dog is between two sizes on the chart. Which way?

Up. A harness slightly too big can be brought in on the adjustment straps; one that is too small cannot be let out, and a tight harness rubs the armpits raw on a long walk. Check the back length figure for the larger size against your dog before you commit, so the panel is not running past the tail.

One caution on the chart above. The supplier's XL neck figure starts at 27 cm (270 mm), which is lower than the M and L sizes it sits above. That is an inconsistency in the supplier's own printed chart, and it is reproduced here exactly as published. Do not size on it. Use chest girth and back length, both of which run in a sensible order across the four sizes.
