Portable Privacy Shower Tent Waterproof Changing Room Shelter

Getting changed behind the ute door gets old fast.

You pull into a free camp, a boat ramp car park or a beach with no amenities block, and there is nowhere to get out of a wet pair of boardshorts. So you do the towel dance behind the ute door with one eye on the road, or you drive home wet, or you hang on until the next roadhouse. Same story on a remote work camp, at a fishing comp, or anywhere the nearest dunny is forty minutes away.

This is a single-room shelter 1.2 x 1.2 m on the ground and 1.9 m to the peak. Two fibreglass poles thread through sleeves and pick up the four corners, four guy ropes and eight pegs hold it down, and the whole lot goes back in a bag 550 mm long. Room to stand up, get changed, rinse off, or park a portable toilet out of sight.

The wall is 190T polyester with a silver coating on the inside face, and that coating is the part that does the privacy work — it is the difference between a plain fabric wall and one nobody can read a shape through in daylight. What the supplier does not publish is an opacity or light-transmission figure, and it is a single layer. So be straight with yourself about it: switch a torch on inside after dark and you will show through. Hang the light outside the door, not in the roof.

What It Does

• Boat ramp change: get out of a wet wetsuit or wet shorts standing up, instead of hopping about behind a car door in a busy car park.
• A dunny with walls: stand a portable toilet inside it and a free camp with no facilities stops being a problem for the rest of the family.
• Rinse off the red dust: hang a solar shower bag off a nearby branch or a roof rack, step inside and wash the site off before you get in the swag.
• Changing room at the carnival: nippers, surf comps and school swimming days, where the block has a queue thirty deep and half of it is not moving.
• Somewhere out of the wind: a spot to get first aid done, change a nappy or get a kid warm and dressed without an audience.

• Two colourways: orange or green — orange if you want to find it in scrub, green if you would rather it disappeared.

Limits

It is not blackout, and nobody has measured it. The silver coating is a real privacy treatment and it works well in daylight, but the supplier publishes no opacity percentage and no light-transmission figure, and the wall is one layer. A torch, a headtorch or a phone screen inside will put a shape on the wall and light out through the mesh window and the door zip. Put your light source outside.

1000 mm is a low water column. It sheds rain and it stops spray. It is not a storm shelter and it is not a substitute for a proper tent — sustained heavy rain, or anything pressing on the fabric while it is wet, will find its way through. Do not sleep in it.

No floor at all. That is deliberate and it is why shower water drains out, but it also means dirt, mud, sand and anything crawling comes in. Bring a mat or a milk crate to stand on if the ground is wet. A floor is not supplied and none is listed as an option.

No UV rating is printed on it. A silver-coated wall will knock down the sun and it will be cooler inside than out, but there is no UPF number on the product, on the bag or in the supplier data, so we are not going to put one on the page.

It is a pole shelter, not a pop-up. Two of the supplier photographs in the gallery show a twist-fold sequence and a round disc bag — that artwork belongs to a different shelter. The stated parts list for this one is two fibreglass poles you join and thread, and the stated packed size is a 550 mm rectangle. Reckon on a couple of minutes to pitch, not three seconds.

Nothing to wash with is included. No shower head, no water bag, no pump, no solar heater and no hanging bar for one. It is the room, not the plumbing.

Guy it out or lose it. With no floor there is nothing anchoring the base but the pegs, and a 1.9 m wall is a sail. Use all four ropes and all eight pegs every time, and take it down before you leave it unattended in wind.

It is a tight square. The walls taper in as they rise, so at head height the room is a fair bit narrower than the 1.2 m footprint. Fine for standing and dressing. Not somewhere to swing a towel around.

Q & A

Can people see me through it?

In daylight, no — the silver coating on the inside face is there to stop exactly that, and it is far better than a plain uncoated wall. At night with a light on inside, yes. No opacity figure is published for this fabric and it is a single layer, so treat a lit interior as a silhouette. Light it from outside and you have got the best of it.

Can a tall bloke actually stand up in it?

The stated height is 1.9 m to the peak, measured outside. So up to roughly 1.85 m you are standing upright in the middle of it. Taller than that and you are ducking, and because the walls slope inwards you have to be near the centre to get the full height. If you are over 1.9 m, this is a crouch.

Does it have a floor?

No. It is a floorless design — the walls come down to the ground and the doorway opens onto whatever you have pitched it on. Good for showering, because the water runs away instead of sitting in a tray. Less good on mud, so carry something to stand on.

Is it a pop-up? Two of the photos look like one.

No, and those two photos are the supplier reusing artwork from another shelter. The parts list for this one is two sectional fibreglass poles, eight pegs, four guy ropes and a rectangular 550 mm bag — a pop-up packs into a round disc about twice that across. You thread the poles through the corner sleeves and peg it out. It is quick, but it is not a spring frame, so there is no wrestling it back into a circle either.

Will it hold up in rain?

The supplier states a 1000 mm hydrostatic head, which is the low end of what gets called waterproof. It will keep a shower off you while you change. It is not built to sit out a night of solid rain, and we are not going to pretend it is.

What does it weigh, and how long does delivery take?

No weight is published for this 1.2 m version, so we have left that row blank rather than guess — the poles and pegs put it in the range where it is a two-hand carry, not a backpack item.
