The morning starts at two degrees and you are in a jumper. By ten you are working hard in the sun and the jumper is either off and lost in the ute, or on and you are cooking. A crew neck gives you no middle setting.

A half zip does. Pull it up to the stand collar and the wind stays off your neck at first light; run it down to mid-chest and you dump heat without stopping work. This one is polyester fleece in two tones, a charcoal or grey body with coloured sleeves and collar, and it has a zipped pocket on the left sleeve for a key, a lighter or a few dollars.

It is cut big. The supplier's chart puts a size S at 110 cm around the chest and a 3XL at 144 cm, and one buyer with a 105 cm chest found an S fitted well. Check the chart below against a jumper you already own before you pick.

Limits

Not windproof or waterproof. Fleece lets the wind through and soaks up rain. No membrane or coating is specified. Wear a shell over it when it blows or rains.

No fabric weight given. The supplier publishes no gsm figure, so we cannot tell you how heavy the fleece is or put a temperature on it.

No front pockets. The sleeve pocket is the only one shown.

Sizes run large. Go by the centimetres, not the letter. Our Australian-size column is a guide only.

Care label not published. No washing instructions are given by the supplier. A cool wash and line dry is the safe way with polyester fleece.

Which Size Should I Order?

Measure a jumper that fits you, flat across the chest, and double it. Pick the size on the chart that is the same or a little bigger. One buyer with a 105 cm chest wore an S, which the supplier's chart gives as 110 cm around.

Is it Warm?

It is a fleece mid-layer. It takes the edge off a cold morning and goes under a work jacket. The supplier gives no weight or temperature figure, so we will not put a number on it.

What Colour is the Body?

Charcoal on the Khaki, Army Green and Coffee; a mid-grey on the Dark Blue. The colour you choose is the sleeves and collar.

Does the Zip Go All the Way Down?

No. It is a half zip that stops around mid-chest, so it goes on over your head.
