Sport Molle Combination Carry Bag Backpacks

One bag for the gym, the swing and the weekend.

Most blokes end up with three bags. A gym bag, a duffle for the swing, and a pack for the weekend away. Then you pack across all three, the sunnies are in the one you left in the shed, and you're buying another pair at the site shop for triple what they're worth.

This is a duffle that carries as a backpack. Twin grab handles for the ute and the carousel, a removable padded shoulder strap when your hands are full, and a set of shoulder straps on the back panel when you've got a walk ahead of you. MOLLE webbing runs across the front, both ends and the top lid, so a pouch, a first aid kit or a torch clips on the outside instead of getting buried.

Three sizes, and they are properly different bags. The 40L at 500 × 250 × 260 mm is a gym and overnight bag. The 60L at 580 × 300 × 300 mm handles a swing or a week. The 80L at 680 × 360 × 340 mm swallows a fortnight — and packed full it is more than most people want hanging off one shoulder.

A word on the litre figures. Run the tape over the 40L and you get about 32 litres of box; the 60L works out near 52. Those capacity numbers count the pockets and the give in the fabric when it is stuffed. Buy on the millimetres, not the litres.

What It Does

• Kills the three-bag problem: gym kit, swing gear and the weekend all live in the one bag, so nothing gets left behind in the bag you didn't take.
• Carries three ways: grab handles through the terminal, shoulder strap across the car park, backpack straps when you've got a bag in the other hand as well.
• Keeps the small stuff reachable: a zipped pocket at each end and one on the top lid, so the charger and the pass aren't at the bottom under your boots.
• Takes bolt-on gear: MOLLE webbing front, ends and lid means a pouch or a kit rides on the outside and comes off when you don't need it.
• Fits the vehicle, not the shelf: it's a soft bag, so it squashes into a ute canopy, a caravan locker or a boot instead of fighting for a square hole.

Limits

Read this bit before you buy. It matters more than the feature list.

• It is not waterproof: this is a fabric bag with exposed zips. Left in real rain, or on a tray for a wet run home, the gear inside gets wet. If it has to stay dry, it goes in a dry bag first — the bag is the carrier, not the seal.
• No fabric rating we can quote: the supplier does not state the shell material, the denier or any water rating, so we are not putting a number on it. We are not going to lift one off someone else's listing either.
• No shoe or wet compartment: there is no dedicated, lined or ventilated boot section. Wet or muddy boots go in a plastic bag or a dry bag, or they go through the whole load.
• Soft base, soft sides: loaded up it slumps. It will not stand to attention on a gym floor and it will not hold its shape half empty. That is the trade for squashing into a canopy.
• The 80L full is heavy: 83 litres of box is a lot of gear, and no shoulder strap makes that comfortable for long. Carry it on your back, or don't fill it.
• A harness, not a hiking pack: the shoulder straps get it from the car park to the room. There is no hip belt and no frame, so the weight sits on your shoulders. For a multi-day walk you want a proper hiking pack instead.
• Litres are nominal: one pair of boots and a jacket will eat a capacity figure alive. Work off the millimetres.
• No trolley sleeve: nothing in the supplier images shows a pass-through for a suitcase handle, so don't count on stacking it on a wheeled case.
• No weight figure: the supplier does not state what the empty bag weighs. If you are flying to a gram, that is a gap you need to know about.

Q & A

Which size do I actually want?
40L for the gym, an overnighter or a long weekend. 60L for a standard swing or a week away — it is the middle of the range for a reason. 80L if you are hauling for a fortnight, packing for two, or carrying bulky gear like a sleeping bag and boots. If you are torn between two, go up: an under-filled bag compresses, an over-filled one doesn't.

Will the 40L go in the cabin as carry-on?
We are not going to tell you it will. The 40L measures 500 × 250 × 260 mm empty, and a soft bag packed full measures bigger than that. Cabin limits differ between airlines, differ between domestic and international, and they change. Take those millimetres, check them against your own airline's published limit for the flight you have booked, and remember that weight limits catch people out more often than size does.

Is it waterproof?
No. It is a fabric bag with standard zips and there is no water rating stated by the supplier. It will shrug off a walk to the car in a shower. It will not keep your gear dry on an open tray in a downpour, and it should not be left sitting out in the wet.

Is there a separate shoe compartment?
No, and that is the honest answer even though it is the thing people want most in a gym bag. There is a zipped pocket at each end and one on the top lid, but none of them are lined or vented for boots. Bag your footwear separately.

Does the shoulder strap come off, and is it padded?
Yes to both. It clips onto a D-ring at each end and lifts straight off, and it has a padded mesh shoulder pad. The backpack straps are a separate set on the back panel. Whether those tuck away behind a cover is not specified by the supplier — work on the basis that they stay on the back panel when you carry it as a duffle.

What colours can I actually get?
Black, Brown, OD Green, Black Camo and CP — all five in all three sizes, and that is the full list at checkout. Nothing else is available, whatever you have seen elsewhere.

How long does delivery take?
