Long kit rattling loose in the ute tray?

Long gear is the awkward stuff. Rods, poles, a folded tripod, a survey staff, tent poles — none of it fits a normal pack, so it travels loose in the tray. It slides under everything else, gets stood on at the first gate, and comes out scratched, bent or full of grit.

Rolling it in a swag or a tarp does not fix much. There is nothing between your gear and the tray floor, nothing holding it still on a corrugated track, and nothing keeping the dust out of the moving parts.

This is a padded soft case built for that shape of problem. A tapered nylon shell lined end to end with egg-crate foam, closed by a two-way zip that runs the full length. Three lengths — 700 mm, 980 mm and 1.18 m — in five colourways.

What It Does
  • Holds long gear still: egg-crate foam runs the full length of both halves, so contents sit down in the padding instead of sliding end to end.
  • Carries two ways: a padded grab handle for the walk from the ute, and a detachable padded shoulder strap for anything further.
  • Loads from the side: the two-way zip runs the whole length, so you lay gear in rather than threading it through one end.
  • Separates the small stuff: a zipped pocket down one side, plus open-top pouches with hook-and-loop flaps along the outside.
  • Keeps the dust off: a tight-woven nylon shell that wipes down and sheds light rain.
Key Features
  • Three lengths: 700 mm, 980 mm and 1.18 m, all at the same price.
  • Tapered profile: deep at one end, narrow at the other. The supplier's diagram gives 240 mm across the 980 mm case and 270 mm across the 1.18 m case, measured at the widest point.
  • Egg-crate foam lining: the supplier calls it "thickened egg cotton". It lines both halves for the full length.
  • Two-way zip: twin pulls on the main compartment, so it opens from either end.
  • Padded grab handle: a wrapped centre handle sitting over the balance point.
  • Detachable shoulder strap: adjustable webbing with a mesh-backed pad and swivel clips at both ends.
  • Side zip pocket: one long zipped pocket on the outside for flat items.
  • External pouches: open-top pouches with hook-and-loop flaps — three on the 700 mm case, four on the two longer ones, counted off the supplier's photographs.
  • Five colourways: black, tan, green, CP and ACU.

Limits

It is a soft case, not a hard case. Foam and nylon spread a knock; they do not stop one. No impact, crush or drop rating is published for it. Put it in the tray under a toolbox and something inside will wear the load.

It does not lock. No lock points, padlock tabs or lockable zip pulls are listed, and none appear in any supplier photograph. It is a carry bag — it is not a security container and it is not a storage solution.

Water resistant, not waterproof. The supplier's own marketing artwork prints the word "waterproof" on it. We are not repeating that. The zip is not sealed, the seams are not taped, and there is no IP rating or hydrostatic head figure behind it. Dust and light rain, yes. Left out overnight in a downpour, no.

The published sizes are the outside of the bag. No internal measurement is published anywhere. The foam and the zip both eat into it, so the usable length inside is less than the number on the label. If your gear is close to the limit, take the next size up.

The width figure is the widest point only. The case tapers hard from one end to the other. Something bulky that fits the deep end will not fit the narrow end, so a long item of even thickness may not go in at all.

The 700 mm size has a width we will not publish. The option name and the supplier's own product code both say 700 mm, but the supplier's diagram for the short case prints 750 mm by 310 mm, and another seller of the same case publishes a different figure again. Three sources, three answers. We are publishing the 700 mm length that two of them agree on and leaving the width blank rather than picking one.

There is no denier figure. This listing used to say 1000D. The supplier's own parameter panel says only "nylon high hardness fabric" with no denier at all, and another seller of the same case says 600D Oxford. Nothing corroborates any of it, so we publish no denier.

Nothing here is certified. No standard is printed on the bag and no certificate has been sighted. The supplier publishes no padding thickness and no weight.

Q & A

How long an item will actually fit inside?

Shorter than the label. The 700 mm, 980 mm and 1.18 m figures are the outside of the case and no internal measurement is published. Measure your gear, then allow for the foam at both ends and the zip. If it is within about 50 mm of the size you are looking at, go up one.

Is it waterproof?

No — water resistant only. The nylon sheds dust and light rain and wipes clean, but the zip is not sealed and the seams are not taped. There is no IP rating on it. Do not leave it out in weather with anything inside that minds getting wet.

What is the fabric, exactly?

Nylon. Beyond that we cannot tell you honestly. The supplier's parameter panel says "nylon high hardness fabric" with no denier, another seller of the same case says 600D Oxford, and this page used to say 1000D. Three answers and nothing to settle it, so we publish none of them.

Does it carry on your back?

The supplier lists the carry style as "can carry back". What is actually visible in the photographs is a padded grab handle and one detachable padded shoulder strap with swivel clips at both ends. No two-strap harness is specified, so buy it expecting a shoulder carry.

Can I put a padlock on it?

Not as supplied. There are no lock tabs or lockable zip pulls in any photograph and none are listed by the supplier.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 10 to 14 days from the day you order, and up to three weeks to regional and remote addresses. Shipping is free to Australia and New Zealand.
