By the end of the week the cabin is a tip. The torch has slid under the seat, one glove is in the footwell, the phone is buried in the door pocket and the sunnies are cooking on the dash. When you actually want one of them you are reaching around blind, and on a corrugated track reaching around blind is how a quiet drive turns into an incident report.

This is a flat panel that straps over the back of a front seat and gives that gear a home. Six open pockets across the lower half, five rows of MOLLE webbing across the top for pouches and hooks, and a loop-faced strip for patches. Hang it off the driver's or the passenger's seat and the kit sits at arm's reach of whoever is in the back.

The panel measures 460 × 590 mm and sits about 30 mm thick flat and empty. That is the number that settles whether it suits your vehicle, so run a tape over the back of your seat before you order. It straps over the top of the seat back and around the base — it does not clip onto headrest posts, so headrest post spacing does not come into it.

Limits

Nothing comes in the box but the panel. The photographs show admin pouches, a medical pouch, a tissue holder, morale patches, radios and torches. None of that is included. The supplier's own note across one of the images reads that the MOLLE hooks have to be bought separately, and that is the honest position for every other item you can see hanging off it too.

No load rating, so keep it light. The supplier publishes no load figure for the pockets, the stitching or the straps, and we are not going to invent one. Treat it as somewhere for a torch, a phone, gloves, a drink bottle and a pouch. Anything heavy enough that you would not want it loose in the cabin does not belong strapped to the back of a seat.

The pockets are open. No zips, no flaps, no lids. On a corrugated track light gear will work its way up and out of a pocket. If something has to stay put, put it in a closed pouch on the webbing.

It is not waterproof and we will not call it that. The supplier's fabric shot shows water beading on the outer face, which is a demonstration, not a rating. There is no published water rating, no seam sealing shown and the pockets are open at the top. Anything that must stay dry needs its own dry bag.

We publish no denier figure. No thread count is printed on any supplier panel, and other sellers of this same shape of panel quote anything from 600D up to 1000D. They cannot all be right, so we publish none rather than pick the flattering one. Heavy duty is a word, not a number.

Universal fit is a marketing word. The panel is a fixed 460 × 590 mm. On a narrow seat it will overhang the sides; on a very wide bench it will leave a gap. If your seat back carries a fold-down table, a rear air vent or a screen, this panel sits straight over the top of it.

Q & A

Will it fit my vehicle?

Measure the back of your front seat and compare it against 460 mm wide by 590 mm tall. That is the whole answer. The straps adjust, so the fit is about the panel size rather than the seat shape, and because nothing clips to the headrest posts, post spacing is irrelevant.

How does it actually mount?

One adjustable strap runs over the top of the seat back, threaded through four webbing loops along the top hem and closed with a side-release buckle. Two more adjustable straps run from the bottom corners around the base of the seat. The exact strap length and adjustment range are not specified by the supplier.

Do the pouches and patches come with it?

No. You get the panel. Every pouch, hook, patch and piece of gear in the photographs is there to show what the webbing will take, and the supplier states the MOLLE hooks are a separate purchase.

Can I hang tools or a recovery strap off it?

Not with any figure from us to back it. Nobody in the supply chain publishes a load rating for this panel, so the sensible ceiling is the sort of light gear you would happily hold in one hand.

Will it work on a seat with a built-in headrest?

Yes. The top strap goes over the whole seat back rather than onto headrest posts, so a fixed or integrated headrest is not a problem. A moulded plastic seat back shell is worth a look first, because the strap needs somewhere to sit without slipping.

What is it made of?

A woven polyester shell with polyester webbing, moulded plastic buckles and metal D-rings. The exact fabric weight and the lining are not specified by the supplier, so they are not on the table below.
