100L 75ltr Large Outdoor Tactical Backpack

One pack for the whole week, not just the weekend.

Three days out and a 40 litre daypack does the job. A week is a different problem. Once you are carrying a swag, spare boots, a week of food and the wet-weather gear you hope you will not need, you run out of pack long before you run out of trip. The overflow gets lashed to the outside, where it snags, soaks, and eventually one strap works loose and you walk on without it.

This is a big soft-sided haul pack for that job, and it comes two ways. The canvas version is badged 75 litres by the supplier and comes in black, khaki or army green. The digital camo version is Oxford nylon, badged 100 litres, in three camo patterns. Both have a drawstring collar under a buckled top lid, a zip-around base compartment that expands, two zipped side pockets, and rows of MOLLE webbing across the front and both sides for the gear that will not go inside.

On the litre figures, straight up: the supplier publishes no method behind either number. The one dimension panel in the supplier's own photographs gives the camo pack as 920 x 380 x 210 mm, and that multiplies out to roughly 73 litres of bounding box — and a soft pack always holds less than its bounding box, not more. So take 75 and 100 as the supplier's labels, not as measured volume. We have not put a measure through either pack ourselves and we are not going to pretend the number is checked.

What It Does

• Swallows a week: one deep main compartment that takes a swag, a sleeping mat, food and spare clothing without playing Tetris at every camp.
• Expands at the base: the bottom compartment unzips all the way round and drops open, so the pack grows for the trip out and pulls flat for the trip home.
• Carries the overflow: MOLLE webbing front and sides takes sleeping mats, a bottle, a shovel or trekking poles on the outside where you can reach them.
• Splits wet from dry: the base compartment and the two side pockets keep boots and wet weather gear away from the sleeping bag.
• Doubles as a haul bag: a top grab handle means it also works as a base-camp or ute bag you throw in and drag out, not just something you wear.

Limits

What this pack will not do.

• The litres are not measured: 75 and 100 are the supplier's badges and nothing more. The supplier's own dimension panel for the camo pack works out at about 73 litres of bounding box. If you are choosing a pack on volume, plan on less than the label.
• No frame, no load transfer: no internal frame, stay or moulded hip belt appears in any supplier photograph and none is specified. There is a webbing hip belt, but a heavy load will sit on your shoulders rather than your hips. A big pack with no frame is hard work over distance.
• It is not waterproof: one supplier close-up shows water beading on the camo fabric, and that is the whole of the evidence. There is no rating, the zips are not sealed and the top is a drawstring under a lid. Rain will find its way in. Line it or use dry bags inside if it matters.
• No rain cover: the supplier's own specification block states Rain Cover: No, and none appears in any of the supplier's photographs. Do not count on one arriving in the box.
• No fitted sizing: the supplier states no torso or back length range. The harness is webbing-adjustable only, so there is no measurement to check yourself against before it turns up.
• Nothing is certified: no standard is printed on the pack, claimed by the supplier or sighted by us. It is a soft bag, not rated equipment, and the camo pattern is a fabric print and nothing more.
• No weight figure: the supplier gives no empty weight for either build. Canvas is heavier than nylon before you put a thing in it.

Q & A

Is the 100 litre pack really 100 litres?

We cannot show you that it is. The supplier gives 920 x 380 x 210 mm for that pack, which is about 73 litres treated as a rectangular box, and a soft pack holds less than its box. Nowhere in the supplier's photographs is it stated how the 100 litre figure was arrived at, or whether it counts the lid, the base compartment and the side pockets. Buy it as a big pack. Do not buy it on the number.

Canvas or camo — which one?

The canvas pack is the plain-coloured one, badged 75 litres. Canvas scuffs well but soaks up more water and weighs more. The camo pack is Oxford nylon, badged 100 litres, and it is the one with the dimension panel behind it, the patch square and the water-beading photograph. Want the bigger bag and the lighter fabric, take the camo. Want black or khaki instead of a camo print, take the canvas.

Will it carry a week of gear?

Yes, that is the size of bag it is. Either build takes a swag, a mat, food and clothing for a week, with room to strap mats and poles outside. Whether you want to walk a long way with that on an unframed harness is a different question, and the Limits tab is honest about it.

Can I take it out in the rain?

Yes, but pack as though it will get wet inside. The fabric sheds a shower, which is what the supplier's beading photograph shows and all it shows. It is not a dry bag, the zips are not sealed and there is no rain cover in the box. A liner, or dry bags around the sleeping gear, is the answer.

What pockets and compartments does it have?

One large main compartment with a drawstring collar and a buckled lid over it, a zip-around base compartment that expands and opens from the outside, a zipped front pocket behind the webbing panel, and two zipped side pockets. Individual pocket sizes are not specified by the supplier.
