3D Mask for Sleep Light Blockout Soft Padded

Night shift finishes. The sun is already up.

You come off nights at six in the morning and it is broad daylight over the donga. The blind does not seal. There is a strip down one side, a gap at the top, and light coming under the door. So you lie there with your forearm across your eyes and hope.

A flat sleep mask helps right up until you roll over. The fabric lies straight on your eyelids, you feel it every time your eyes move, and the moment your face hits the pillow the whole thing shifts sideways and lets the light back in.

This one is moulded instead of flat. Two deep eye cups hold the fabric clear of your lashes, and a raised nose baffle fills the gap either side of your nose — the one place light almost always gets through on a cheap mask. It blocks light. That is the whole job, and it is the only thing we are going to claim for it.

What It Does

• Keeps off your eyelids: the cups are deep enough to blink inside. Nothing presses on your eyes and nothing rubs your lashes.
• Handles a side sleeper: the back is a flat padded band with no buckle and no slider, so there is nothing digging into your temple when you roll into the pillow.
• Fits your head: hook-and-loop closure, so you set the tension once and leave it there.
• Goes in the wash: the supplier states it can be machine washed or hand washed.
• Lives in a crib bag: soft enough to squash flat into a jacket pocket, a swag or the top of a day pack.

Limits

Here is what it will not do.

• It is not total blackout: the supplier artwork prints “100% light block” and we are not repeating that. Nobody measured it and faces are not all the same shape. Expect a good seal and, depending on your face, the odd sliver of light along the cheekbone or beside the nose.
• It is not a medical device: it is a padded fabric eye cover. It blocks light and that is all it does. We make no claim at all about how, or how well, you sleep with it on.
• It is not waterproof: the artwork says “waterproof material”. There is no rating behind that and a padded fabric mask is not waterproof. Treat it as washable, not weatherproof.
• It does not cut noise: no ear cover and no padding over the ears. If the donga next door has the telly on, this does nothing about that.
• No certification sighted: no standard, test report or fabric certificate was supplied, and none is claimed here.
• No weight or panel size: the supplier gives the 680 mm overall figure and nothing else. Those rows in the table are left blank on purpose rather than filled with a guess.

Q & A

Can I actually blink inside it?

Yes, and that is the point of the moulded shape. The cups are deep enough that the fabric never reaches your lashes or your eyelids, so your eyes move freely underneath. If you wear lash extensions, or you simply cannot stand anything pressing on your eyes, that shape is the reason to pick a contoured mask over a flat one.

Does light still get in around my nose?

That is the honest weak point of every sleep mask, and it is exactly what the raised nose baffle is there for — a soft moulded bridge that drops down either side of the nose instead of stopping short of it. It seals far better than a flat mask. Whether it seals completely comes down to the bridge of your nose; high, narrow noses tend to leave a little more room than broad ones.

Will it stay on if I sleep on my side?

The back of the strap is a flat padded band with no buckle and no slider, so there is nothing hard between your head and the pillow. Rolling onto your side pushes on the outer edge of the cup rather than into your eye. It can still shift if you thrash about — nothing strapped to your face is immune to that.

How do I wash it?

The supplier states machine or hand washing. No wash temperature and no drying instruction are given, so treat it like anything with foam in it: cool water, gentle cycle, and air dry out of the sun rather than putting it through a dryer.

Will it fit a big head?

It measures 680 mm end to end laid flat with the strap out, and the hook-and-loop closure adjusts anywhere along that. The supplier does not state a head circumference range, so we are not going to invent one — but 680 mm of total length is generous for an adult.

How long does delivery take?

Ten to fourteen days from the day you place the order, and allow up to three weeks to be safe. Delivery is free to Australia and New Zealand. Regional and remote addresses take longer again.
