Five in the morning at the pre-start, standing about in the dark waiting on the shift brief, and the cold is into you before the day has even started. A plain fleece is warm right up until the wind moves through it. After that it is a jumper with holes in it.

Cold makes you slow and it makes you impatient. Slow and impatient is where a bloke rushes a task, skips a step and puts a hand somewhere it should not be. Staying warm is not about comfort, it is about still paying attention at the end of the shift.

This jacket is built the other way round from a jumper. A woven face fabric on the outside takes the wind and the abrasion, and a fleece lining sits behind it against you for the warmth. Attached hood on a drawcord, hook-and-loop cuffs, a drawcord hem, underarm zips for when you heat up, and zip pockets on the chest, the hips and both sleeves.

Seven camouflage patterns and eight sizes, XS through to 4XL. What it is not is a wet-weather shell. The supplier states no membrane, no water rating and no fabric weight, so there are none printed below.

What It Does

• Handles the pre-start: standing around in the dark waiting on a brief is exactly where a jumper gives up and a lined jacket does not.
• Dumps heat on the climb: underarm zips open both sides, so a walk up a ridge with a pack on does not leave you wet through from the inside.
• Keeps you off the skyline: seven camouflage patterns, green through to arid and digital, for hunting and glassing rather than for standing next to plant.

Limits

• Not waterproof: no membrane, no coating and no water rating are specified by the supplier. Take it as a jacket that copes with drizzle on the walk to the ute, not one you work a wet day in.
• Not a windproof shell: the word windproof sits on the supplier's own artwork. No membrane is named and no test is quoted behind it, so it is not repeated here as a specification.
• Fabric is not stated: the fibre content and the fabric weight in gsm are not specified. The copy that used to sit on this page claimed cotton with microfibre in one paragraph and cotton with polyester in the next — two different answers, neither of them sourced. Both are gone.
• No garment measurements: sizing is given as body-weight bands only. There is no chest, sleeve or body-length chart from the supplier, so nobody can tell you exactly how it will sit on your frame.
• Camouflage is a pattern: a print on fabric, not a credential. It does not mean this jacket was issued to, approved by, or affiliated with any armed service, and nothing on it is certified to any published standard.
• Not high-visibility: the entire point of camo is being hard to see. Do not wear it roadside, around moving plant, or anywhere a hi-vis rule applies — that is what the hi-vis range is for.
• Not flame resistant: no FR treatment or rating is specified. Keep it away from hot work.

Q & A

Is the hood detachable?

No. It is sewn into the collar — there is no zip or press-stud line around the hood base in any of the supplier images, front or back. It rolls back behind the stand collar when you are not using it, and the drawcord pulls it in around your face when you are.

Will it keep me dry?

No. There is no water rating on this jacket at all. The woven outer face will see off light drizzle for the walk from the ute to the crib room. In real rain you want a shell over the top of it.

What size do I order?

The supplier sizes it by body weight rather than by chest measurement — XS covers 50–55 kg, through to 4XL at 115–125 kg. The full table is in the Specs tab. There is no measurement chart behind it, so if you sit at the top of a band, or you want to get a jumper underneath it, take the next size up.

What do the colour codes mean?

The supplier ships codes rather than names: CPOD, CPBK, DD, BIO, ACU, AT and FG. It does not publish what each one stands for, so the swatch on the option is the guide to go by, not the letters.

Is it warm enough on its own?

It is a lined jacket, not a puffer. On a cold morning it does the job by itself; when it drops below that, layer underneath it. No temperature rating is specified by the supplier and we are not going to guess at one.

How long does delivery take?

Ten to fourteen days from the day you order, and allow up to three weeks. Delivery is free to Australia and New Zealand. Regional and remote addresses run longer again.
